As a daughter of Caribbean parents myself, many of my cousins are always mistaken for being from some other race or ethnic group. Even my own mother over the years, has been mistaken for an East Indian. If people study the history of the Caribbean, then they would not be so shocked or surprised at how diverse in appearance they are. [Edited 7/19/09 17:05pm] Hi 2elijah! My grandfather is West Indian (Barbadian) and people sometimes thought he was something other than black, mainly because of his hair and features. I think this has more to do with the limited perceptions that some people have of how black people look, especially with regard to hair texture/length, noses, lips and skin color - in short physical appearance. This is evidenced by the fact that someone on this thread said that Susan is "obviously" mixed. I am still trying to figure out what an "obviously" mixed person looks like. However, I don't want to hijack this thread by asking. I understand you, I think Americans white & black have a very narrow view/understanding of 'racial' mixture even though it's all around us, because in America 1 Drop of black blood makes u black So we may be used to people who look like Susan Vanity & Prince who say they are black or African-American, Susans hair(cluster of grapes curls) is not a reflection of her African ancestry. W Africans Central African (which where Transatlantic slaves mostly come from) don't have loose wavy curly hair. Her look is mixed facial features. Trinidad (as others have educated us on)has certain ethnic mixes. I have aunts and female cousins dark(er) skinned with very straight or curly hair. My aunt margaret(dads sister) has very fine wavy long hair and facial features that a lot of people always thought were Asian, she & my dad were always called the Black Chinese because of their hair and facial features. But their father is 1/2Native American1/2S.French and 1/2 Black-American Susan reminds me of Irene Cara

What about blacks in the Caribbean and how they came to be? It will be no different than how Black Africans got into North America, same story, different destinations and it sure wasn't a vacation cruise. It's just that folks seem to forget about the Africans brought to the Caribbean, and focus more on the Africans brought to North America. You never really see any documentary on the Africans shipped to the Caribbean. Only when Columbus is mentioned. They also forget about the Native Americans from North America, that were shipped to the Caribbean too, to work as slaves on the sugar plantations. Oh and let's not forget about the Irish that were forced on those same ships, to work as slaves on those Caribbean plantations, alongside the Black Africans, as well. There is sooooo much people don't know about this topic sadly. [Edited 7/20/09 10:16am]

I don't know why it's so hard for people to understand how diverse African American/Caribbean (South and North) ancestry is. Susan is black of Trinidadian descent and Vanity's father was black. However, I always hear people say that Susan was Indian and Vanity was Hispanic. I'm not trying to be snippy or anything, but that just bothers me. I thought Susan and Vanity were black the first time I saw them. Black people in the Americas/Caribbean are as diverse a group as they come. It makes me laugh to this day how people still think Vanity is Hispanic. They also feel Prince is Bi racial LOLOLOLOLOL

Jill was great, her album is amazing, probably up there with Vanity as the best of the protege albums (Bria dosen't hold a candle to her), and you know Jill Jones was half Italian and half Black (Although she looks really light) [Edited 7/30/09 1:02am] So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

[Edited 7/30/09 1:02am] when she has her blonde hair she looks more white to me. she looks more black when she wears her curly dark hair. both her parents on the light side anyways. she was blogging on behalf of obama during the election too. i really wish she would have done more acting. there is a hidden talent there. she just needs the right vehicle.

Did anyone ever find out if Moonsie was an Indian last name? For a while there I thought I needed a Globe to follow this thread. My mother is Italian and VERY dark so that she looks more like a woman of Indian heritage (asia) verses Italian heritage (europe). Given the migration of the human race there are not too many clear distinctions between one race or ethnic origin and another. Anyway Moonsie sounds Indian to my uneducated ear so that's why I ask.

Well, at least she's not doing the old chicks who are no longer hot trying to be hot thing (Cat Glover),
I'd hate to see her all saggy titted in some camasole with a pathetic little teddy bear. Besides, Madonna's already cornered the tragically-too-old-for-lingerie-yet-insisting-to-rock-it-anyway market.

Hey I love seeing you again Bria V, I hadn't seen a post from you in a while and I was worried you got over this place. About saggy older women. Funny but Sophia Loren looks great in lingerie even well past 60 and I bet that Tina T does too. But they are sensual as well as sexual. Us older women have to hang up the overly raunchy look if we don't want to come across as gross. Lingerie is sort of like make-up, a little goes a long way. Even plastic surgery to lift a womens breasts up to her collar bone don't help much. European women seem more capable than U.S. women of staying "sexy" without looking like a fool as they age.
