QUestion about The Time,

You'll all think i'm weird and so uneducated in the world of Prince-dom. But how good are the Time? would I like them?

lol, my only experience is through performances with Prince, purple rain and rave dvd etc...

And I don't want to buy the CD's if I will not like them. Their my only side project left to buy. J

the first 3 time albums are basically morris day on drums and vocals and prince on all other instruments and backing vocals. probably the best related artist albums and the closest to sounding like prince albums

Fair question, but easily answered. Go buy their first two albums. Six or so songs each. Listen to them back to back in order. Take a break. listen to Ice Cream Castles, then Pandemonium.

Then listen to all 4 again the next day.

On day 3...judge for yourself.

Nope, it's a good CD and ranks highly above the overall BLECK that is Ice Cream Castles. Barely half that album is any good.

pandemonium is good, skillet, jerk out, it's a well rounded album

ice cream castles isn't the most well rounded album, but you have jungle love and the bird, two tracks that define the time

the first 4 time albums are all well worth getting, but the morris day and the time album, it's about time, is a dissapointment, half live and half studio, but the live versions don't capture the time live very well. they are excellent and very entertaining live. it's a shame they didn't put in an appearance during the o2 shows

i find it strange that you say they are the only side projects to buy, as there are so many, and you would normally start with the time, sheila e, the family, madhouse, jill jones, vanity 6, appolonia 6 as the essential albums, and then move onto ingrid chavez, carmen electra, mayte, chaka khan, larry graham, rosie gaines, wendy and lisa, jesse johnson, morris day solo, mazarati, andre cymone, etc

I've never heard that Morris Day & The Time album.

I do believe Pandemonium is a definitive Time album. The first two albums are just punk funk. But Pandemonium really covers the fact that they're not only funky, but that they can rock out and stay funky. Rhastus can testify to that as much as anyone. Pandemonium captured the bass AND the guitar, while leaving the keyboard firmly intact.

I'm also glad Chocolate finally came out on that CD. But man, it's dizzying to keep up with the different versions of "My Summertime Thang" and "The Latest Fashion". Talk about a mash-up waiting to happen!

from what i recall about the live stuff, there was no swearing on it, i think it was edited out. the live version of jungle love on jay and silent bob strikes back is much better. it's on the soundtrack cd

there was also a remix of the latest fashion with a rap by prince on the shake maxi single btw

the first two time albums were recorded with morris day on drums and vocals and prince on bass, just like cloreen bacon skin, and then prince laid the other instruments on top. i used to think prince recorded the whole thing himself, along with vocals, and then got morris to put his vocals down, like how the family album was recorded, so i though there might have been prince vocal versions in the vault, which would have been cool. morris also plays drums on the extended part of let's work 12", prince plays the drums on the main section and they swapped in the studio during a single take without a break. i wonder what else he played drums on, such as appolonia and vanity albums, as they made out that the time were the backing band

Buy what Time is it first. The best album ever made by anybody.

Next is a toss up. If your more into the keyboard straight up funk, get the debut album The Time. If your more of a rock/guitar lover get Pandemonium

I would save Ice Cream castle for last. It does have the Bird and Jungle Love which everybody knows from Purple Rain, but aside from those two songs and the excellent My Drawers, its pretty week

There aren't many REAL Time fans on this board. Most people can give you a clinical description of the music, but few know anything about the impact the bad had on 80's R&B and Funk. All the tracks on their first 3 albums are important. None of them are throways. Their influence is HUGE. Prince controlled everything in the end, but for sure didn't come up with all of it himself, or even most of it himself. Just in the end as Wendy said "He was da one wit da money", so he took credit where he wanted and played over people's part where he felt like it and on and on.

You betcha it is!!!

I'll listen to The Time almost as much as I listen to Prince - they complement each other

You have to get all the albums and listen to them in order to understand the progression from full Prince control to the guys having some control of the concept on Pandemonium. There are no fillers here at all.

Standout tracks are Cool, Get it Up, The Stick, 777-9311, Wild and Loose, The Walk, I don't wanna leave you, Jungle Love, Chilli Sauce (this sums up The Time), The Bird, Skillet, Blondie, My Summertime Thang, and Shake

As for Jesse's solo work, Free World absolutely rocks and hopefully his new release in October this year will kick butt.

Also try and get hold of Morris' solo effort, Color of Success - the title track and Don't Wait for Me are classics. His follow up Daydreaming is a little light on IMHO but worth a listen to hear Fishnet.

Enjoy and let us know what you think
"Grace": "Do you always keep lingerie in your glove box?"
Morris: "None of my women wear gloves"
