Favorite back ground vocalist female

Prince sings everything in all of his songs. The lead, the back ground vocals everything as well as play all the instruments. When he lists others as back ground vocalists, ikind of wonder about that because I don't hear no one else but Prince biggrin HE really deserves all the rewards he gets too. smile

Which leads to my next question.

Who are some of Prince's best female vocalists?

These vocalists could be back ground vocalists only or led a song with him.

These are my top 3
Rosie Gaines
Sheila E

My favorites would be Wendy and Lisa. Best... I don't know, maybe Jill Jones.

Rosie Gaines first!

Boni Boyer, first as well. But I prefer Rosie's charisma.

My 3 favorites too

Jills vocals are found in a lot of his music from 1981-Graffiti Bridge i believe

She did background on the Time, Sheila E & Mazarati too

Hello Kiss Parade, ATWIAD and many more

I don't like a female voice that's too overbearing(Shelby) or too distinct: I love songs by Rosie G(her work)
Boni I loved her voice too, and she did good in not being overbearing or much too distinct,

Lisa Wendy Jill & Susannah blended with his music well and they felt like muses, not solo artists

I would probably say W&L only because I think their vocal stylings compliment Prince so well. Next would be Jill Jones.

Rosie is a great singer, but some of the background vocals she did on Diamonds and Pearls didn't work as well (to me) as they could have. I think it was because the songs had to be sang i a higher register and Rosie had to sing in the higher part of her range through songs like "Daddy Pop", etc. Now the songs that Rosie does adlibs are great to me. JOTY wouldn't have been the same song without Rosie.

Wow.

I would HAVE 2 say JJ (Jill Jones), because of the way she complimented those MANY records she was on.

On their own as singers, I would then mention Boni, Rosie and Shelby.

But how many recordings were they on compared 2 Jill?

With all the beating Bria has been getting here lately, I gotta say that her backgrounds were very effective on 'Planet Earth', as well as the recent releases. Folks didn't know it was her on 'Planet Earth', which is officially the most under-rated Prince album ever.

With all the beating Bria has been getting here lately, I gotta say that her backgrounds were very effective on both '3121' and 'Planet Earth', as well as the recent releases. Folks didn't know it was her on 'Planet Earth', which is officially the most under-rated Prince album ever.

Can you give me an example of Jill's skills? I don't even know if I could identify her voice without someone telling me it's her lol

...and that's one of the major ways she has complimented the many songs she was on.

That's a necessary skill of a backup vocalist.

As far as her skills R at lead vocal, I think U already know this!

I would actually bet that she's the most recorded backup vocalist on Prince's (and protege's) albums. She even sang a ghost lead track over some Apollonia and/or Vanity songs 2 thicken their vocals up, didn't she?

I'm not joking. I couldn't name one song that I know her backing vox from! I assume stuff from 1999 cuz she was in the videos but pure backing vox, I couldn't name one single song boxed

1999 - PRINCE (Warner Bros.) : Backing Vocals on "1999", "Automatic", "Free", featured vocal on "Lady Cab Driver".

PURPLE RAIN - PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION (Warner Bros.) : Backing Vocals.

"THE BELLE OF ST. MARK" - Sheila E(Warner Bros.) : Backing vocals.

APOLLONIA 6 - APOLLONIA 6 (Warner Bros.) : Backing Vocals on "Oo She She Wa Wa".

"MANIC MONDAY" - THE BANGLES (Columbia) : Featured Backing Vocals (uncredited).

MAZARATI - MAZARATI (Paisley Park / Warner Bros.) : Backing Vocals on "Strawberry Lover" and "I Guess It's All Over".

PRINCE - "HELLO" (Paisley Park/Warner Bros.) : Uncredited backing vocals

PRINCE - SIGN O' THE TIMES (Paisley Park / Warner Bros.) : Co-lead vocals on "It's gonna be a Beautiful Night".

"GOOD LOVE" - PRINCE (uncredited backing vocals)

I'm sure I'm missing some.

Also, I must say that his backup vocalists on the live Leno version of "Ol Skool Company" were the best live backups I've ever heard from P.

Shelby, Elisa Fioriello, and Liv Warfield.
