Smart move making a fitness video.
I have always said that Robin Powers should look into a fitness video too. Go Mayte Go Mayte! "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

Will the DVD come with the requisite Arabian sword to be balanced atop one's head?

I love belly dancing for fitness, the arm movements are good for my bad back. Now if I can get abs like hers from it, I might consider checking this out

She should have done this a while ago. She's been doing it since she was practically a baby. Nobody can say they know more about belly dancing than she does. Go with what you know!!!. I'd buy it even if she mever even met Prince if it's any good. .Core Rhythms (a latin dance video) is doing great and it's alot more fun than regular fitness videos.

She has no other choice than to do this video. She has no acting career haha
In the dance profession (or in the arts in general) when you are known as a 'teacher' it's really a secret disgrace or embarrassment. That's why she never officially came out as Britney Spears' choreographer for "I'm a slave 4 u" and played it off as 'oh we just hung out and I taught her a couple of moves" BS haha! No one goes into teaching unless you are desperate.... and thats the bible truth! It's not like math teachers or English teachers that have a real passion for teaching. IT'S COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IN THE ARTS

IT'S COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IN THE ARTS Can someone make a living, the style of living that she is use to, on being a professional bellydancer and not teaching? How much are people willing to pay to see a professional bellydancer? The only bellydancers I ever saw were working in restaurants. So far there have been no Broadway musicals that center around bellydancing. I guess my point is, Shorty, short of being the seventh wife to a rich shiek what hope did she have of ever getting rich off of bellydancing. Her mother was not interested in her becoming a starving artist type that's for sure. wow.

Guess you've never heard of Suhalia Salimpour than. Check her out she is a legend in the bellydance world with the right vision and passion mayte can do something but I always heard she wasn't going to do this because she had no intrest in being a teacher...I guess the right amount came along or she found the passion for dance again. Either way great for her hope it does well and is better than the ones out there (except) Suhaila's no on can beat her at belly. Proverbs 23:9

Suhaila is not that great specially after she gained all that baby weight. Her mother is a legend not her. What Suhaila is (was) very very beautiful, but beauty never replaces true skill.

Middle eastern dance IS an art form just like Ballet but dance in general is not a respected profession. If a ballet dancer can't make a living, what makes anyone think that anyone can survive on belly dancing... it's just impossible. belly dancers ALWAYS have real jobs and dance on the side. Mayte still has her looks and if she's willing to keep selling her beauty she still has a veeeery small window of time to make it as an actress. Once her beauty is gone, it's all gone. and the way this industry works they look at mayte and probably think "we already have a Eva Longoria"..... Racism still blooms in lala land. Her agent(s) and manager are not doing very well putting her out there. if I were her I would TRY to switch to CAA while she still has a chance. Although UTA is still one of the top agencies but they don't seem to care about her. prolly cuz of her stank attitude problem. =) [Edited 6/16/09 19:42pm]

I have the feeling that Mayte's mother was a stage mother who didn't see the whole picture. Like maybe throw in some tap, jazz anything that could be used on broadway etc. The acting world is so competitive, at least she has SOME work. She's about 36, work isn't easy to come by now if you haven't already made a great name for yourself.

You are correct almost all dancers have done it/or will teach at some point, why?? because most dancers don't make it in the business. so technically you are right. Because most dancers don't have real careers as dancers, they end up teaching.

This thread did kind of get messed up Shorty. I was just responding to someone suggesting that she should be able to make a living off of dancing alone. I disagreed because bellydancers do not have many chances of making it on bellydancing alone. It would be a huge fall to go from Paisley Park and dancing on stage with P to a life as a professional bellydancer. She should have been trained in other dance forms. Anyway I think she's doing well with what she's got. Sorry shorty if I put words in your mouth.

I think she's done some ballet as well.

As long as she does something she loves to do and is happy with it, that's all that matters. Good for her trying different things.
As a professional dancer, I can tell you it's a tough career especially as you get older. Teaching could be an option but it is not for everyone as it requires strong teaching skills and encouragement. Dancers, we tend to criticize a lot but who doesn't

Her formal backround is in ballet. She has training as a member of one of the junior corps in Germany, but Lord I forget which company. At least the few dancers I met that worked with her from the Miami area confirmed her chops were solid. But eeeek, I imagine when you're doing the Prince thingy so much of what you do is about a presentation the way he envisions, envelopes, packages it: I know she had a short lived dance company when they were married, but honestly I never would have known about the other forms of dance she's done had it not been for some random videos of her solo performances I saw in the Glam Slam bar rooms; that heffa was seriously bustin' out some very serious Tyla Tharp lookin' pieces. I was like well g'on, Girl!
