Shelby J. ruined 'Indigo Nights.'
The vocals sound like they are being shouted the entire time.
It's horrible.

The songs she sings solo are okay, but here 'backing' vocals are way too loud and harsh to be in the background where they belong.

I totally agree. She shouts a bit too much for my taste.

She didn't ruin anything for me at the O2 or on Indigo Nights, but I can understand your opionion. Her voice isn't really a background singers'.

I get your point. You know I love Shelby and plan on getting her CD if she gets it out like she said she was, in 2010. Funny but Bria's sound is really perfect for background because it doesn't stand out. She hit the right sound on Planet Earth, She coooed perfectly for songs like Future Baby Mama and Mr. Goodnight. Weird that out of the two of them it was Bria not Shelby that did Elixer. I know the decision was more hormonal than anything, but still...

I forget which show, Koko club M.Jazz Festival ...
but she ruined Controversy, "CLAP YO HANDS YALL, STOMP YO FEET"
it just lost it's New Wave feel
She's a good singer just not a good backup singer

Do those of you who think Shelby didn't do such a great job staying in the background think that Rosie did a better job?

but Jill has good range and much more range than was exhibited on the Purple Music she sang back up for, because it wasn't meant to be overbearing but subtle and sensual, she cut loose just a bit on the Ladder & Kiss(extended)
Saul Saul don't U touch that channel

I think it is Susannah who is cutting loose on the Ladder. Jill isn't listed as a backup singer on this. My favorite is Rosie.

it's not jill, it's not susannah ..it's taja sevelle listed as taj[/quote]

Yeah thanks I got my Free mixed up with the Ladder

Outside of her album and the Ladder, do we know of any other work she's done in the Purple camp?

I know she's been around since at least Purple Rain

I think Shelby's Cd, should it ever see the light of day, does have potential. I will definitely get it.
But backing vocals on 'Indigo Nights' was not her best moment.

Rosie knew how to blend with Prince more successfully, I think.
She could harmonize, and while you could hear her she sort of knew how to work the mic a little better to where it wasn't like she was just yelling words when she was supposed to be in the background.

Even her 'gospel' ad libs seemed to compliment Prince more than compete with him.

Can we also agree that Bria Valente is a good backup singer just not a good singer?

Never heard her do it live. Studio 'magic' covers a multitude of 'sins.'
So I guess I can't agree with that one.
Sorry.

I was trying REAL hard to give Bria a valid compliment but alas it too may not be true. This poor woman keeps batting 0 and nothing as of yet is changing that. giggle

Rosie was also a recording artist before hooking up with P, so she knew a lot about that stuff before.

I think that Tamar did a very good job with background vocals on 3121. Her vocals really were in sync with Prince's (Incense and Candles/ BLB/Love).

IMO, Shebly is good as well, just different, but still good.

Since I will abmit I'm kinda of a newbie, I will have to go back to Prince's earlier works and find out who some of these signers are before I can make futher opinions.
