I would HAVE 2 say JJ (Jill Jones), because of the way she complimented those MANY records she was on. On their own as singers, I would then mention Boni, Rosie and Shelby. But how many recordings were they on compared 2 Jill? With all the beating Bria has been getting here lately, I gotta say that her backgrounds were very effective on both '3121' and 'Planet Earth', as well as the recent releases. Folks didn't know it was her on 'Planet Earth', which is officially the most under-rated Prince album ever. . [Edited 6/16/09 11:16am] Can you give me an example of Jill's skills? I don't even know if I could identify her voice without someone telling me it's her To a degree that's the point, the women singer like Shelby to me are overbearing, and live to hard at times Jill is a trained singer and you hear her breaking thru on the Ladder, the 2nd half(long version of Kiss) and of course Lady Cab Driver (her trained vocals made those Screams of Passion sound just right ) She's on everything from the Time Vanity 6 Prince Sheila E Mazarati & I believe the Family

"GOOD LOVE" - PRINCE (uncredited backing vocals) I'm sure I'm missing some. [Edited 6/16/09 12:59pm] You listed a good number there she did a few backing vocals on ATWIAD especially the LADDER since she was the Beautiful Friend that was there during the incident, it was fitting that she sang back up on Hello I was sittin' pretty with a beautiful friend ("Oh darling") When this man tries 2 get in the car of course her own Paisley Park release Jill did a lot of studio work for Prince and his albums and a lot of it wasn't always credited. She talks about it on her website/myspace

Jill Jones? jeez - Marva King, Boni Boyer, Rosie Gaines all better than Jill Well, that's debatable. Jill's vocals on her Paisley Park LP were astonishing. Sweet mixed with a sexual vibe that Boni and Rosie could never pull off. I'm sure that Boni and Rosie could hit notes Jill could only dream of, but that doesn't make them "better". As background vox are concerned, Jill added a nice flavor to Prince's gumbo. I love Boni and Rosie's efforts (especially Boni's), but they seemed to have a hard time holding back their wailing (for lack of a better word) on some cuts. Marva? Not a fan. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

You explained it really well That's one thing I didn't care much with Bonnie but even more with Rosie is the, get down and have church belting out sounds. Not saying they can't sing, but to me it doesn't + add + to Prince's music, it begins to sound like every other new soul curcuit review I did like Boni much better than Rosie, she stayed in good bounds with the Black Album & Lovesexy Cat also did good background work too but Jill has good range and much more range than was exhibited on the Purple Music she sang back up for, because it wasn't meant to be overbearing but subtle and sensual, she cut loose just a bit on the Ladder & Kiss(extended) Saul Saul don't U touch that channel

Iam really surprised noone as of yet thought Sheila E to be a good back ground Vocalist.Iam the on one LOLOLOLOl
The reason iparticularly like Rosie, and Sheila is because ican actually hear their vocies on any Prince song. His vocals(which are strong/good even in falsetto) doesnt drown theirs out. With the other female vocalists Prince's vocals drown theirs out Ican barely hear Wendy, Lisa or jill when they are singing. Ido realize that musicians and song writers alreadyhave their minds made up on whois going to sing what part and how that person vocals willcome across. The question is did prince ask Rosie to sing loudly on various songs and asked Wendy,Lisa and Jill to sing softly on various songs. That is a some thingthat remains to be answered. Ipersonally think itwas a lil bit of both.

My 3 favorites too Jills vocals are found in a lot of his music from 1981-Graffiti Bridge i believe She did background on the Time, Sheila E & Mazarati too Hello Kiss Parade, ATWIAD and many more I don't like a female voice that's too overbearing(Shelby) or too distinct: I love songs by Rosie G(her work) Boni I loved her voice too, and she did good in not being overbearing or much too distinct, Lisa Wendy Jill & Susannah blended with his music well and they felt like muses, not solo artists

Ipersonally think itwas a lil bit of both. I was thinking about Sheila too but thought of her more as a side act/protege I don't think she did enough to be compared as a background vocalist Actually Wendy & Lisa's vocals are very distinct, Jills Taj Susannah would do more blending For example, a lot of Wendys and Lisa's vocals sounded like Hello, Love or Money, Sometimes It Snows In April I think Lisa has a strong vocal than Wendy, I've heard enough live shows prior to Wendy joining and her vocal solo on 1999 I was dreaming... Wendy's has a nice airy touch and it sounds well when blending with other vocals Sheila colead on Erotic City background on Girls & Boys and I don't remember other pre sott, she was very distinct on Black Album Lovesexy and certain Graffiti Bridge songs But I think because she was a frontman and tended to shadow Prince her voice was used on as a background plus 2

I think it's more about the favorite female vocalist that compliments P's music better. To be fair, they both bring something different to the table. Marva being more "gospel" and raspy than Jill. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Rosie and Shelby J are my two favorites. That may be because they contrasted with Prince's. I have listened to Planet Earth and 3121 to specifically to hear Bria's vocals and maybe I should not admit this but I can't pick her out. This may be exactly what effect he wanted for those two CD's; less of a contrast and more of a subtle blend. After hearing Rosie and Shelby J I started to look for more work that they had done.
