Rosie Gaines Love Since I mentioned Rosie on the Tamar thread, I decided to show some love for her on a new thread.
Rosie was arguably one of the MOST talented people to ever come through the Prince camp. She has an amazing voice, plays multiple instruments - keys, drums, guitar, etc, writes and produces. It's sad that the industry (Prince included) focuses on packaging and promoting talentless barbie dolls while ignoring real talents like Rosie because they don't fit the pre-cut mold. Anyway, here's some clips that underscore my point about her beauty and talent. [Edited 5/21/09 14:52pm] perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

When the Elixer C.D. was given to Bria I was extra bitchy about it. Then one day I had an eureka moment. I thought of Elvis then David Bowie, then Elton John, then Barbra, Tina, Cher etc, etc. None of them showcased back-up singers. Same for their dancers. Would the twin sisters still be known as the dancing twin sisters instead of the Twinz if it were not for Prince? He has not done all that he could have and I wish would have but he's done more than most when it comes to sharing the spotlight. It's sad to think of all the great music we'll never listen to because studio bigwigs are more concerned with what we are looking at. Make no mistake the American public is partley to blame. Rosie is great. I had the opportunity to go in the studio a few times with Rosie while she was recording her solo cd after the NPG at Paisley Park in Dec 1993. I met her at Glam Slam and she invited a friend and me to come out there. It was really cool. She sat at the piano and played some songs acapella and believe it or not we sat in the atrium at Paisley Park and got a member of the staff to bring us a vcr and we watched my video tape of the Nude tour from Toyko. It was funny because she wanted to now how I got it, because she didn't even know it existed. In my opinion she has the best voice of anyone Prince has worked with. TRUE BLUE

I want to buy a Rosie C.D. and I do not know which one to start off with. Any suggestions? I know Amazon has some of her music. I am just so sick of waiting for stores to sell what I want to hear. I am not a musician, not even close, so I am out of the loop without a little help from my friends (that would be you all).

I want to buy a Rosie CD too.....
Why cant we walk into a record store log onto the internet and get some sort of portable CD packaging printer to make it there and then so we the people can get what we want when and how we want it without all the run around and phones calls and zone delays.

It's sad to think of all the great music we'll never listen to because studio bigwigs are more concerned with what we are looking at. Make no mistake the American public is partley to blame. I agree. I think Prince has been extremely generous in sharing the stage with the talented band members that he has had over the years. That's one reason why I laugh at folks who say he was "threatened" by Wendy and Lisa. That's insane to me given the immensely talented people with whom he's shared the spotlight in his bands over the years. People like Rosie, Miko, Renato, Sheila, Rhonda, Levi, Michael B and others are light years ahead of anyone in the Revolution and he gave them all serious floor time. So, I will never knock him for that. However, his overall choices of solo acts to invest in and promote have not been as stellar. He seems to get the best for his bands and the "rest" for his solo projects, especially when the "rest" fit his myopic definition of feminine beauty. As such we got a heavily promoted album by Carmen Electra and an afterthought push for Rosie. Fast forward to today and we get an album by Bria not Shelby or Liv. I also agree that the larger public is partly to blame. However, since music has been taken out of the schools, I think people lack a real appreciation for true talent. Therefore it is easier to distract them with pretty faces, great bodies and ubiquitous promotion, especially given the increasingly superficial state of society. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

I didn't have music in school unfortunately so I deffinately talk like a lay person. My older brother, who did have music, moved to New York to be a sound tech and my older sister (who also had music class) has always been in alot amateur musicals. I can not read music but I can at least hear that Bria's range is much more limited than Rosie's. I am hoping that maybe all this attention given to Susan Boyle will actually lead to something and not be a fluke. Compare the press that Susan Boyle has received since April and the press that Bria has received over the same amount of time.
It's not just the musicians that loose out; We the public loose out on the gift God gave these people to share with the world.

I know this thread is about Rosie but a few days ago I got on MySpace to send a fan letter to Shelby J. and she said she's planning to release an album in 2010 she didn't say if it was in the first part of the year or not. Anyway it's GREAT news!!

That is great news. I would like to hear a full album from Shelby where she can spread her wings and really show her own personality. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

It's not just the musicians that loose out; We the public loose out on the gift God gave these people to share with the world. You're right. I am so glad that I came along when I did because we had music in schools. Also, my dad always played jazz and salsa, my mother played soul music while my brother and cousins played EVERYTHING else so I developed an appreciation for the beauty of the art. Today, people don't know the sound of a sax, trumpet, violin, harp, etc. It is sad because music is one of the greatest gifts we have been given. It is one of those rare things that erases boundaries and unites people because when it is real it comes from the soul. Rosie is one of those angels that was blessed with amazing musical talent. Too bad, the industry and public didn't take notice like it should have. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

Oh, I just had to add the "Googaga" off of her "Closer than Close" album is an absolute gem. I loved this song when I first heard it 14 years ago and I STILL love. It's classic. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

There has got to be something we can do. When I am listening to music I am not also watching the video. I am doing something totally unrelated like writing or housework. That's why it doesn't mean crap to me what musicians look like and if they have pretty hair like Milli Vanilli. It's not just because I am older, I was always like that. I keep writing nasty stuff about poor Bria because I feel a bit patronized by her CD, as if I don't know a good musician from an OK at best singer. I also want to give my money to the musicians that deserve it and not the studio execs who want lap dances in exchange for contracts.
