Adam Ant Vanity and Andre Cymone

Adam Ant's song 'Vanity' is obviously about her...not a bad tune, anyone got any pics of them together.

And the album Manners & Physique by Ant and Cymone was released in 1990, never heard it and cant get it. What style of music was it and was it good or was it so bad thats the reason why is disppeared into the music of the unknown? lol

Why is it "obviously" about her?

Well he went out with her 80s, this album its on came out in 80s and her name is Vanity!!

Vanity
I cannot speak of what I feel
And yet I feel so much
I know that woman's arms can heal me
Like an angel's touch

She says she likes the accent
She thinks it's so polite
I think she going to like it more
When we're alone tonight

She cannot speak of what she feels
And yet she feels so much
Except her lover's arms can heal her
Like an angel's touch

Money's money my little honey
A rich man's jokes are always funny
Build them walls but I'm coming through
Don't trouble trouble till it troubles you
Money's money my little honey
A rich man's jokes are always funny
Ring came off in heights of passion
Wear it now, and that's not fashion

You open up your heart heart behold
Another door slams shut
And tongues are not of steel
But take a look how deep they cut

Its early 90's pop-rock... We used to have that album at the radio station i used to dj at, but i don't think anyone ever played anything off of it. I didn't know Andre Cymone worked on it. Its not bad, but nothing really stands out on it imo. Pretty generic.
Change it one more time..

Eh, it's a toss up. Probably is, but who knows for sure. I have some Adam Ant music...I forget if that album and/or song is in the mix. I'd have to look.

PS Just looked. I only have 2 songs from that album. Neither is "vanity". Now I must search it out. As if I didn't have enough to do today, thankyouverymuch. lol

Anyway its on the album Strip, track 5. It is about her who else would it be about...the lyrics alone speak for itself.
Ive never seen a pic of them together now that is hard to find.

Following that idea, the song "Prince Charming" from the album "Prince Charming" is about Prince, the album came out in the 80s and his name is Prince shrug

It's all in the lyrics,

Don't you ever, don't you ever
Stop being dandy, showing me you're handsome

Prince charming
Prince charming
Ridicule is nothing to be scared of

Don't you ever, don't you ever
Lower yourself, forgetting all your standards

Silk or leather or a feather
Respect yourself and all of those around you

Never been a fan of 'Manners & Physique', it has a real generic sound for the time. Not like his earlier solo albums which are really interesting and under-rated - lots of horns, strings all kinds of things going on musically.

The song 'Vanity' is from 1983's 'Strip' album. I'm not up on his or Vanity's love life, but it seems like a fine line between her being in Prince's camp and not being. They would've had to have been dating before the album came out, but during or after her aliance with Prince (who gave her the name obv.)

.

Photographs of them together[ posed for studio ones ] do exist, because there was a documentary on Adam shown in the UK about 5-10 years ago and I remember seeing pics of Vanity and Adam on the programme. They were black and white and they were holding each other, they looked good together and seemed to have a real chemistry. They looked relaxed and happy. I think they dated before she met Prince so it would have been around 1980 or 81.

Really? Well if the song is about her, obv. she wasn't known as Vanity when they dated.

Other than the song being called 'Vanity' there's nothing in the track lyrically to suggest it would be about Denise Matthews, fun if it was though.

Yeah, so from that doc it says she was going out with Ant in 81...she started seeing Prince around 82, the Strip album came out the end of 83 where she was already named Vanity, im sure he would have known this. also he was very much a huge star in the UK in the early 80s where Prince was still fairly unknown, although Ant's popularity was starting to decline around 83 where Prince was escalating 10 folds, so it could be about her.
Maybe its in Denise Matthews autobiography or Adam Ant's one.

I read Adam Ants biography a few months ago and he discusses dating Vanity

There is a story in the biography of how he is in a club, i think, with her and Rick James comes in and starts saying stuff like 'why you with that white boy when you could be with me etc.. they both laughed and left smile

I'ts quite a good read he suffered a bad breakdown a few yrs back which was well documented in the UK press

The book also discusses his relationship with Jamie Lee Curtis and Heather Grahame lucky lad biggrin

The book is called Stand and Deliver
What you don't remember never happened
