She can her own thing. He doesn't exactly have the gal locked up. I mean, she's free to do whatever, but she's chosen not to. She wasn't even on the stage w/ Prince on Leno, was she? But she sure can TALK about singing.

Honesty, I haven't thought that far ahead about her. But actions speak louder than words. Never heard of her before, and probably won't hear a peep about her after last week.

True-she's probably had her 15 minutes. The cd is nice though.

if her album is a studio-only creation that was meant to be kind of an add-on project to his two cds, that's cool. it'd be kinda nice to see it framed that way, though, instead of wondering what the deal is with bria as an artist/performer/whatever.

Maybe she's not ready for the spotlight--live. Playing Leno with Prince for your first show has to be a little intimidating.

If she's not ready to be in the spotlight, then don't make a CD. It's that simple. At least Gregg Alexander of New Radicals had the sense to realize that being a front man wasn't his gig, and he bowed out after the first album. If Brian is "not ready" by her own admission, then she should have never stepped behind the mic, whether Prince was pushing her or not. I mean, who's the bigger boob? Prince for creating something so superficial, or Bria for selling herself as some great singer who's yet to prove that, just to work w/ Prince?

Just because a person is not a live performer doesn't mean they shouldn't make a cd.

Really, who cares if she performs or not?

I don't care, but my point is when she sits on Tavis' fluffly chairs and says she's a singer, and it was great to make music w/ Prince etc etc....show us whatcha got. She's not blind. She knows the level of quality that not only Prince expects, but the fans too. Plus...wouldn't she WANT to work it a bit to sell even more CDs and get more of her cut? Seems counter productive to sit on that powder fine ass and do nothing.

then maybe it's not time to release an album? especially since there are plenty of talented performers who'd be more than happy to rip it up on national television if given the chance.

true, but didn't you say you like her album? So why not go ahead & make it? The Beatles didn't perform after 1966 but they made some decent albums.

Aren't performing & recording two different animals?

i do like her album, but not because of her presence on it. i mean, i don't dislike her voice, but anybody with a decent voice could have sung over prince's backing tracks and made it a good album. everyone knows prince could recreate any given part of what he did on her album and perform it on tv or in concert. why not make the album's central figure someone who can do the same?

i can appreciate if this is a vanity project (pardon the pun) and it's more of a gift for prince's girlfriend than a serious music project meant to launch bria's career...but if that's the case, i hope she doesn't expect to be treated like a serious musician.

Well, I have to admit I agree with you there. The vocals really could have been done by just about anybody. At least Tamar was hired for her skills as a singer both live & otherwise.

One thing I'll say for her (based on the few times I have listened to the album) was that she was able to do some of those Prince-type harmonies that maybe other singers (lame ones like Britney) could not do as well. So maybe she does have something to offer on a cd. Or maybe she's working towards being a live performer?

I only play devil's advocate because of this line of reasoning: if you want her to song live, it must be because you like something about her her and that means the cd is a success. If you don't want her to sing live because you think she sucks, then why complain that she doesn't? Does that make sense?

Personally I don't care much about the cd, so I don't care if she performs at all. My presence here on this thread is only a tribute to my ability to waste time

i really don't know if i hate her or not, so i can't say either way. lol

her voice on the cd is neutral. it's pleasant, but it's not remarkable in anyway. who knows what studio trickery was done to it, though even if her vox were largely unmodified, it's not exactly like the songs called for vocal acrobatics. at best, it could be said that she has a good ear for harmony and melody? um, yay? shrug

right now, to me she's like that cartoon group gorillaz - a made up musical act created by well-known musicians in an attempt to create a different style and to take the focus off themselves while still being able to create music. the cartoon band just provides a visual focus because, well, you gotta have SOMEthing fronting the album, right? might as well be creative, even if it's not real.

of course, i've actually SEEN gorillaz in concert. lol
