Did You Miss The Family Chat Today?

I watched about an hour of it last night. They're so open to any questions and willing to share in the process of the new record. It's nice to see artists embrace their fans. Can't wait for the new LP, though it sounds like it might not hit us until the end of the year.
Clare Fisher may be on board! That'll freakin' kill me. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Apples and oranges. Why all the negativity? Who took a "jab" at Prince???? A lot happened in 24 years with all those guys. But thanks to Sheila E.'s Family Jammm, and ?uestlove pushing them, they finally decided THIS was the right time to do something.

By the way people....if you watch until the end, at about the 1:50 mark....Paul and Susannah sing "Desire" acoustic w/ just a guitar. LOVING THAT!!! They also sing a few bars of "Nothing Compares 2 U" just after that.
Brent Fischer, Clare's son, shows up to talk about putting more strings on the album. Paul did some reDONKUOLOUS strings, but they really want Clare to take the helm with it. He talks just a couple of minutes about how they all met, etc. Such a big chunk of history in this. [Edited 4/27/09 9:01am]

"St Paul is a punk"....I guess Prince holds a grudge and he's not going to let them use the name. I don't blame him either.
And of course the Family album is probably well over 75% a Prince album, and the main reason anyone cares about them is because of the Prince connection. Not that they aren't talented musicians, but there are thousands of talented musicians out there that no one cares about. . [Edited 4/27/09 9:52am]

And I didn't say that I didn't care about them...I'll be curious to hear their new album. I liked a couple of songs off St Paul's first solo album. Someone needs to bring back the Mpls Sound and they may do so just a bit. But I won't consider it another Family album just like I wouldn't consider a Jam/Lewis/Jesse penned one a new Time album. Prince made the Time and the Family what they are...his magic will not be duplicated if he is not there now. Actually his magic is not even present much on his current album, so it is probably gone forever for the most part. . [Edited 4/27/09 10:26am]

I don't think The Family is trying to make this anything more than it is: Just a reunion of some friends who want to make music together again, and who want to share that music with people who remember and like the group. I don't think they're trying to pretend they're exactly what they were, or that they're going to pose some great competition to Prince, or anything else. It simply is what it is. I don't understand what some people are getting so bent out of shape about on this thread. I'm looking forward to their new music.

St. Paul's Holly Rock rap was hilarious! I didn't know that was originally part of 'Feline'. I haven't listned to Feline in years, but I thought it was an instrumental. Interesting stuff.
I gotta stay up for the next time they do these Q&A's, I really dig that they do these, very cool.

But on the real, it's not about loving Prince...Dude is one of my favorite artist, but I keep it on that level... I'm just into giving props to the Family without shitting on dude for no reason.. Let's save the Prince digs when truly warranted...Believe me, they will come....lol

I'm happy about their reunion...In fact, I'll be the first one in line for one of their shows...For real... But I think some folks (myself included) are just scratching their heads over the subliminal disses from some folks in this thread that really are not needed...

Are some people such Prince ass kissers, that they just can't appreciate a group of highly talented musicians from musical families for doing a project together? Gheezus. Ungrateful. The Family and Jill Jones albums are two of the best loved protege albums to date, and when one of those gets back together to do a project, solely based on the fan response from FOUR YEARS AGO (and a good judge from ?uestlove), why not just say "Hey....I'm excited to hear what they're doing.", instead of all the negative boolsheet?

SUBliminal? i think they're absolutely liminal. UBERliminal. I'm not really dissing them with what I said...maybe I'm dissing the lack of self-awareness of some of their fans. Anyway, I listened to that entire 2 hr interview and thought it was really good. It is interesting that they are soliciting Paypal donations to help pay for getting the record made...not bad or good, but that I've never seen that done before. But they certainly have a small fanbase, so it is what is probably necessary. I doubt they'll make much "profit" on the album or tour, so if there are some wealthy benefactors out there, why not let them help out.

The Pay Pal thing came about from a fan, NOT them, initially. Someone overseas wanted to help their cause (remember, most of the record is done at this point, probably 85% at least). Paul almost jokingly said "Sure, send it to my pay pal", gave out his email, and BAM, the guy sent money over. It grew from there. And really... why NOT support someone you enjoy? They're not hurtin' for cash, but it is coming out of their pockets. You buy an album and early on, those costs go to recoup for studio time and promotion anyway, way before an artist ever sees a penny (ask TLC). So why not help that along the way? I have a feeling that their site will be great, and they'll offer some great incentives to join and/or purchase things/packages/etc on their site. I'm anxious for it all.
