It is only on Prince-related sites I see him get any disrespect and that is because some Prince fans have convinced themselves he 'forced' Prince to accept Jehovah's Witness doctrine and become baptised. If Larry was on-stage it was because Prince wanted him on stage. If Larry was playing bass (bloody well as it happens) it was because Prince wanted him playing bass. In fact, to my knowledge it was Larry himself who chose to leave his regular spot in Prince's band around 2000 or so. I saw Larry live in '98 and thought him amazing. I loved the aftershows with him included. I barely even noticed Larry on 'NPS' or 'RAVE' until I hit the 'net. Larry is hardly responsible for those albums. Thank you! If it was not for Larry Graham, I would not have learned to play bass. The man is a living legend, and the amount of disrespect he gets around here is truly unwarranted. Seeing him play "Hair" with Prince at First Avenue in 2007, was one of the biggest highlights of the 07/07/07 shows for me. LG did not ruin Prince's music because Prince's music has not been ruined. The only people who think that are people who are stuck in a time warp and want to pull Prince into their misery. LG gets nothing but love from real music fans. I remember when he walked in at the Macy's show the line of folks cheered for him. So maybe it's just some of the rabid fans here who like to continually dog LG. Either way, People mature, they evolve, they grow up! Sadly, some Prince fans did not get the memo. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

I actually like most of Prince's music so I definitely ain't stuck in no time warp, and I can't say anything bad about Larry himself because as i've stated b4 I don't know the man, I just believe the least listened 2 albums in my Prince collection are the 1's Larry appeared on and these are the 1's that I just don't like very much, I ain't blaming him 4 these albums and i'm sure he is a talented bass player but all i'm saying is that I don't think he seemed 2 fit in very well with Prince's band.
The start of this thread might've come across as me hating on the man but I was very drunk when I started it so apologies 2 any1 i've offended. I wanted what was yours, now I just want u 2 care

Some of his older GCS material was excellent. I never cared for his association with Prince. Maybe it was because I was missing the NPG 94 era with Mayte. NPG 92-95 was great...

I'm not disrespecting Larry's talent. He's a great musician and an innovator and has some really incredible work under his belt.
But his work with Prince is absolutely awful and his style does not mesh well with Prince's music. The whole point of Prince's brand of funk is that it was a step forward and something different than the style of funk of the 70's that Larry pioneered. Prince going down that route felt like a huge step backward, religious issues or not. I have some of the same issues with Maceo. As much as I love his playing and his past work, I don't think it's a good fit for Prince's music. Again, it sounds like a step backward to a time and style that Prince had helped the genre move forward from. These guys are very talented, no doubt, but Prince's fascination with them and his ego trip of having them in his band let their "sound" really take over his work, and not usually for the better.

From what I've learned Larry Graham helped Prince thru a very hard time in his life and he is much more than just a musical partner with him, he is a friend so the Haters need to leave this shit alone.

true, and i think the changes prince went through are what people are unhappy with. not entirely fair, i agree, but if we're just talking about the music then i think acknowledging that prince went through some changes and talking openly about our views on his new musical direction is fair. if the subject matter of the things prince went through in private is so sensitive that his new music can't be criticized then he should probably bow out of the public eye, don't you think? larry is a great musician and i like a lot of his work. i like 'gcs2000' a lot. but i do think the influence he had on prince, post- 1997, musically speaking, has not been entirely for the best. it's quite likely that this isn't even larry's fault; prince was obviously caught up in a nostalgia trip and larry himself might have had very little to do with prince trying to sound 'old school' in the way that he did between the years 1997 and 2004. i don't think anyone wishes prince had never heard of larry graham. his work obviously had a big impact on prince's early development as a musician. it wasn't until they became buddies in 1997 that it started to seem like prince was focusing on his idol at the expense of his own music. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

separate from the musical question, i do agree that it seems larry cross passed with prince at a time of extreme vulnerability. depending on your view of the jw faith, you're naturally going to come to different conclusions about what happened next. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

I didnt know they were that close. It must be hard for Prince to read comments like "he sucks major ass" about his close friend. Fans are ruthless and so disfunctional! Sad sad sad

It's odd to me how people will let Prince's religious rants go by the wayside in favor of another album, even if it is mundane and uninspired, yet they'll crucify Graham for having the exact same religious beliefs, and ones not so apparent in his music, (the same music which helped, along with others, form the artist we know as Prince). Seems a bit two-sided.
