i don't think it's a rotten album at all. it's fine music, good production, pleasant melodies. we're not listening to it to be wowed by bria's voice, and thankfully her voice is bland enough not to get in the way of prince's songwriting and musicianship. people who are poo-poohing this album right out of the gate are missing out. maybe they're not missing out a LOT, but they're missing out all the same.

polkadotbliss said: Just a quickie really to say-theres alot of folk saying they haven't even listened to Bria's album-even though they have it.....i dont get that one at all. It really is at least worth a listen-you may be suprised-it has a very classy sound-she may not be Sade (she isn't) but the tunes are catchy-and the music is fabulous-really tight and nice-put it this way. Apart from P's stuff-one album I really do rank for musicianship is Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. Brilliant playing on that album. Well take a listen to Elixir. I genuinely believe the music is that good and lije i said-she may not be Sade-but as a first album-man i'd sure be chuffed if this was my first-in fact-her second is gonna have ALOT to live up to-especially if theres no Prince-she'll need to hire the best session players to get a worthy follow up to ELIXIR.
ps-so is he doing something with Shelby J..I hoped we'd hear something from her by now. PPS-now I know all the tunes off these 3 discs i can honestly say no erview i read previous to listening to the set matches-its like they were listening to diffrent albums to the ones we got so to me it proves-reviews are a pile of poo. Ignore em' and make up your own mind-especially with Elixir-its way better than its getting credit for Elixer is a good album with good songs. She's no Sade, true, but I think when the midget said they "were tired of waiting for Sade to make a record", he meant just that chill type music. Bria's album has that for sure. Not sure about the Maxwell correlation, because Urban Hang Suite is EPIC (and took me two years to get realize that). However I get what you're sayin'. I'm not a fan of recent protege's of his, and I've not even listened to Tamar's album. But Bria's is nice. No, she ain't gonna be singing opera any time soon, but neither is Prince. It is what it is. And it's pretty good.

No - there often is nothing that can be done to make some expand their vocabulary. They shouldnt be forced. Someone has to be on the far ends of the curve. An album will a misspelled title and mediocre music by a barely mediocre "artist" is going to help me "expand [my] vocabulary?" Good one. I quite like 'Ellixer' it's nothing groundbreaking, but it is an album I would listen to late at night. I just wonder why Bria isn't out there promoting it at all. [Edited 4/8/09 4:58am] 3121... Don't U Wanna Come?

I just read this on some website...
"So to sum up: MPLSoUND is the one you dance to in the club, LotusFlow3r is the one you pop on when you're home from the club and ready to kick it, and Elixer is the one you put on when the stragglers won't go home and you want to go to bed." I can't comment as I've yet to play Elixer. Something about the one song that keeps getting shoved in our faces has given me no desire to listen to the rest of the album. I will at some point listen to it. Probably when I'm washing up or something.

elixer turned out to be much better than I'd expected, which might be the equivalent of giving W. credit for talking coherently. Still, not a waste of time. Especially the title track.
