The Time (x 2) In my absence, I've acquired two of their albums [hence the title]. When I was on my purple hiatus at the beginning of the year, I checked out the albums since I had little else.
I now see why people say that The Time were the one protege capable of dethroning Prince What Time is It? was my first and still my favorite. The music is just incredible. Totally goes with the whole vibe of this group. A bunch of guys that knew a lot about two things: partying and pleasing the ladies. "Wild & Loose" and "777-9311" are the catchiest tracks on the album. The latter, I acutally didn't like at first because it was repetitive and the beat felt off. I even went so far as to find the AB clip with them performing it. "Wild & Loose" is the one song that captures the essence of The Time perfectly. You hear it and you know what they're all about. And it's fun as hell! "Gigalos get lonely too" was part of the reason I considered this album at all. It turns that deragatory term into a device that actually makes Morris Day desirable to the ladies. I mean, listen to the vocals. He shoulda been one of those 80's heartthrobs based on that alone. Ice Cream Castle was my 2nd and even though I LOVE the title track, the rest of the album makes it so that this album cannot stand up to its predecessor. Tracks 3 and 5 can't even be called songs, really. Though "Chili Sauce" is some hilarious piece of dialogue. I literally when he started quoting lines from the movie. And I found "If the kid can't make you come" simply hard to listen to. So much for the group's clean image that I got from the other songs, lol The music video for the title track got me interested in this album. To me, it totally gives off that "paisley park" vibe. All of those bright colors and such. I dunno what it was, but I just fell head over heels. My only question is: Why the hell is the album version of "Jungle Love" different from the movie version?! The movie version kicked ass! had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

They are an incredibly talented and tight unit. - JD [Edited 2/14/09 18:52pm]

The 1st album has some classic cuts C L I always thought of the 1st album as Prince Featuring The Time Its basicly a prince album.. . In an intervew with Morris Day, When asked what was is like being in the studio recording the album. Morris replied... "Uhhh....." [he gos silent for a second] "The hand claps and finger sanps were real" [morris luaghs.. Hinting thats all the involvment some members had] Dreamy said: My only question is: Why the hell is the album version of "Jungle Love" different from the movie version?! The movie version kicked ass! What Time Is It? was recorded by Prince with Morris on lead vocals. So based on hearing that album, you are really saying you can see why Prince is capable of dethroning Prince. As others have already said, performing live was the band's true strength. I prefer the faster live version of "Jungle Love" as well.

Yes The version on Ice Cream castle is the same version that was played in the movie. The studio version is unreleased. Now Jungle Love was live in the movie, But the studio version was released on Ice Cream Castle

Just read all of the replies just now...
I'm just reviewing the two albums I HAVE... I haven't seen the other two for sale where I live (very poor selection, but I've made due otherwise). @ people hi-jacking my thread cuz I didn't talk about the other albums. I can't talk about what I don't have. What Time is It? is definitely my favorite of the two. That's totally the image I have of the group, the perfect way of characterizing that "character." I don't know any other way to say it. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I know i can't wait 4 there new one 2 come out. Seeing them in Vegas made me realize how much real talent was in that band. They never really got a chance 2 show that. Since the original members only lasted two albums. Still even then Prince did everything in the studio. Pandemonium is the only one that showed all of there talent. But still not quite enough. This new one should really satisfy what I been missing 4rm The Time a real classic Time album. Showcasing all of them..... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

What people don't realize is that Prince created that character Morris plays all the time on record and on film. Prince can do that character better than Morris & Sheila E. The voice U can't even tell if its Morris or Prince. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Let me first jump in with peace and props to my homeboys Rhastus and JD (both of whom I met in Vegas during the Time reunion shows last year). Big ups to these brothers.
Secondly, the Time is a great live band because they are great MUSICIANS and ENTERTAINERS. Despite the Prince influences, direction, participation or whatever you want to call it, seeing these guys live is proof of their immense talents. If you want to see a group that will kick ass live and defy you not to have a good time, go check those brothers out.

The movie version kicked ass! The Time = "Prince's R&B and Funk outlet" once he became "pop". Prince is The Time. That is why you've not seen another real CD from them since a long time ago (and not because he is blocking them). When they released solo projects, and produced other people, they all used his sound from he beginning. Yeah their production style have changed a bit, but they aren't producing as much as they used to either. Live? Prince drove them. He was making them work hard. He was their band director.
