This thread http://prince.org/msg/7/176643 will give you a glimpse into how many in the community felt about Tamar.
Many could not wrap their minds around Prince selecting a protege that did not fit the typical "Prince girl" look. [Edited 3/31/09 15:25pm]

Many could not wrap their minds around Prince selecting a protege that did not fit the typical "Prince girl" look. I remember those sentiments... and apparently by the looks of this thread and a few others in this forum, they still haven't healed from the scars brought upon by the selection of Tamar. bellanoche said: airbak said: I think that comment alone points to the MAJOR underlying issue here. What makes someone like Aretha Franklin or Tamar unattractive, their decidedly African American features? The fact that they don't mirror the light complected, long-haired, racially ambiguous Prince prototypes that he and other fans seem obsessed with? Let's not lose sight of the fact that both Tamar and Bria aren't overflowing with exceptional singing ability. The fact that one is lighter and thinner doesn't change that fact. [/b]However, at least we ACTUALLY saw some of what Tamar could do as she did perform with Prince. She did sing okay and she danced as well. Bria had three concerts where she could have shown up and shown us what she could do and neither Prince nor she believed in her abilities enough to put her "talents" on display! If he doesn't package her with him some kind of way, who rightfully would pay their money to see her or any of his proteges perform? airbak, this is such a good point! People like to avoid this issue and dance around it here, but it is clear that many fans on this site share Prince's beauty preference when it comes to the "type" of women he dates, presents as "proteges" or features in his videos. This is part of the reason why folks were so quick to dismiss the posssibility of there being a romance between Prince and Tamar, but are so quick to assume that Bria is going to be "the next Mrs. Nelson," as one thread here suggested. It is sad that there are so many colonized minds (Prince included) that still view darker skinned black woman and/or women who are thicker as unattractive. However, when P has video after video where all the main women are Latina or non-black, it fuels the acceptance of this myopic beauty ideal. Look at the videos that have been shot for the Lotusflow3r project alone - there's a Latina in Chocolate Box, the bi-racial ballerina in Crimson & Clover, Dania Ramirez is in $, and then you have Bria's video. The last time a darker skinned black woman appeared in a Prince video was in Black Sweat, and look at how negative P's disposition was toward her. So, of course, you have Prince fans like Brofie who feel obliged to berate Tamar and other non-traditional Prince types. It seems the only place for the darker skinned sisters is singing background, but folks on here were even dogging Shelby for her look and weight. They just can't win. Preach the truth girl! Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

i could care less HOW someone looks as long as they bring it. I actually feel the whole image thing has become an issue for Prince. He seems to spend more time on that than writing decent songs (imo) anymore. I can tell you if he would throw on some jeans and a tee and let that hair kink up maybe he'd have more time for living life.

Bria Valente's album is awful and she can't sing.Prince this was another bad business move, should stuck with Tamar who can sing.In all honestly the other 2 albums are not that much better either. The best thing about the whole album was the artwork.Bria will never be hear of again after this album , unless she is posing nude in some magazine. This is dejavue with some of those non-talented people he had on Paisley Park.Instead of promoting talented artists like, Jill Jones,Taja Sevelle,Rosie Gaines,Margie Cox (Tamara) Tamar, he would rather promote non-talent people like Bria and Carmen Electra.Trying say Bria is the next Sade, that is definetly an insult to Sade.

OMG I love you..... I feel the same way it's so bad it had to be givin away with Prince's so people might listen to it. I don't know what you think an upgrade is but if Bria can get a lead role in a play like Tamar and do another cd without P's help than maybe but I don't see that for her. At least Tamar got put on stage with Prince and won a grammy for her work. Prince maybe you were doing her father a favor but it was a waste of time. She is not a Sade nor is she a Chante Moore nor is she a Janet Jackson I can stand to listen to them live or on cd but not Bria music is not for her. Proverbs 23:9

You are absolutely right about the comments made on this thread about Tamar coming from some men and women from various backgrounds on this forum, and it's not just regarding Tamar, but other darker-skinned, black female artists that surrounds Prince. I applaud you and airbak for calling attention to that. I found it sad that some members of this site were going out of their minds because Prince was promoting an African-American singer two years ago, and some of them are still praying for her downfall. The comments were terrible, and I agree that some fans on this thread are "dancing around the issue of beauty" and adopting the idea of what's acceptable as beauty in this society, such as the "colonized" minds as you stated floating around here. Notice the comments about some of his "back up singers" being referred to as cows, fat or unattractive or comparing Bria's looks to Tamar on other threads. The saddest part two years ago, and now, is the comments that came/come from some, not all, black males on this site about Tamar. I often wonder how would that black male's mother feel about their son(s) making comments about women that reflect the skin tone of their own mothers, and the fact that it was her womb they were conceived in, yet they hold an inner self-hatred for darker-skinned, black females. A damn shame. It's sad really how many in this society define physical beauty, and put it in one box. There's nothing wrong with recognizing physical beauty, as physical beauty is temporary anyway, and like a flower that will eventually wilt after awhile, but, for many in society to "put a final stamp or a limit" to what is beauty or acceptable as beauty, is so unfair seeing how we're all individuals, with various, physical features and other attributes that contributes to beauty, physically, mentally and spiritually. Truth be told, no record exec wants to be bothered with a Prince protege cuz they know right off the bat the chick will be mediocre. Not her fault, its just that when you get produced by Prince you just end up with a prince song not a collaboration or even a showcase of your own talent and image/persona. Umm, Tamar's voice wipes the floor with Bria's. Bria's album is mediocre at best and a snoozefest at worst. Even her looks aren't that unique. The only reason she got an album is because she's dating Prince. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

What makes ARetha Franklin unattractive is her puffy bulldog face and dusgusting body; not her black skin or features. Tamar's big forehand and widely spaced eyes could make her look exotic but only make her look like a greasy blowfish with a weave. She had some nice legs but we could see her start to chunk up just in the short time that Prince was showcasing her. Having to be seen between thopse Twinz all the time wasnt helping her either - not rock star queen can have backup singers who are way hotter than her and expect half the audience to look at her. Again, the shade of her skin tone isnt an issue. Prince was with Nona Gaye who is as dark as Tamar and no one complained because Nona is fine as wine - just a flat out beautiful black woman. Could she sing liek Tamar? No - but that doesnt matter in the highly stylized world of pop music today. There is a reason that the most incredible and talented musicial artist on the planet is known as much for his looks and style as he is for his music. Oh, and sorry, I dont care how dark she was, that Black Sweat video chick wasnt hot. [Edited 4/6/09 6:40am]
