Sheila E. Jams with Music Students in St.Paul MN (video included)

Sheila E. Jams With Local Music Students
ST. PAUL (WCCO) ―

On Thursday, Sheila E. jammed with McNally Smith College of Music students in St. Paul without rehearsing, and didn't miss a beat.

Like the title of her hit song, Sheila E. has led a pretty glamorous life, which got a big boost in Minnesota.

Prince took her under his wing in the 80's and her musical career soared.

On Thursday, Sheila E. jammed with McNally Smith College of Music students in St. Paul without rehearsing, and didn't miss a beat.

She's there to offer advice to a room full or aspiring performers.

"If you're really serious about this you've got to put in the work. It is not easy at all. There's a lot of work to be done studying and learning," said musician Sheila E.

And she learned from the best; first by her father Pete Escovedo who is a percussionist for Santana.

"My dad is the reason why I play," she said.

Being one of the few female percussionists at the time was challenging for her.

"It was like a fight, continually throughout my career, always, in a sense, having to prove I could play," said Sheila E.

She certainly proved she could play to Prince, who was quick to recognize and promote her talent.

"Being attached to his name I think helped my career, it's like being at the right place at the right time and who you know," she said.

Now Sheila E. is sharing her experience with music's next generation. She the latest national artist to come through and share her knowledge at McNally Smith. Bobby McFerrin was there a few weeks ago and Ice Cube visited last year.

"It was a treat and an experience to meet her," said one student. "It gives you hope of making it in the industry."

That's hope for students who could possibly become the next Prince or Sheila E.

Her assistant is a McNally Smith graduate. Her next project is a reality TV show where celebrities move into a mansion and compete to cross-over into the country music scene
