Sheila E. and George Clinton had done Gone Country! The "Gone Country" home page doesn't seem to have info on the new season but commercials are airing. Are you going to watch? Do you think it's a good idea for their careers? Or are you snobby like me and horrified it's come to this for musicians like them? Discuss.

If this is a reality show then I would say yes, it's a stupid move in terms of p.r.
...or maybe not.. it's not like they're broke. At least Sheila isn't. She is an active A-list working musician with investments in standard businesses. But the way things go these days in terms of brand recognition, appearing on a reality show is the way to go. Sad but true. The country aspect doesn't bother me at all considering these are professional musicians with decades of experience between them. We know them from the infamy of performing only one genre of music. But realistically speaking they're well versed in many styles...not just the ones we've seen them record through the years. That's just the truth with what it means to live your life as a professional musician. They usually have insights, influences, interests in, and ability to perform anything with near encyclopedia- like accuracy. George, I'm not sure about in terms of how well he can fare. But Sheila already plays bass and violin which can be an advantage to her in the competition. Ja, at the end of the day it's just a silly tv competition. Because we live in a TMZ kinda world, it just translates into brand recognition and instant celebrity for those who partcipate instead of doing it the old fashioned way. I personally detest most reality shows out there. But their surge in popularity, their undeniable appeal for a rise&fall celebrity scandal obessed nation, as well as a shitty economy which can spend less on traditional tv entertainment....ja, sad but true there could be an actual benefit that comes from this. I don't see it as a tragic thing (other than my personal distaste for reality shows), rather than, times are changing in American mass entertainment, and people out there in Hollyweird and music have to adapt to keep their bread buttered.

George Clinton maybe, but Sheila E? I think it was cool that she was a guest on that Next Great American Band program, but this is beneath her.

"Gone Country' is a reality show on CMT. They take celebs, musicians, actors, anybody really, have them all live in a house, or bus, or...something... and coach them to be country singers.
ps; here is a link to the page on sheila's official website that states additional info and other cast memebers. http://www.sheilae.com/wh...ndex.shtml [Edited 1/8/09 2:47am] [Edited 1/8/09 2:53am]

Depends on one's perspective, though. Again, alot of people realize how much of a marketing goldmine appearing on these shows can be. It wasn't always that way. But now that appearing on a reality tv show means instant brand recognition, a lot of folks are appearing on these shows to parlay it as free p.r for other things they're doing. Trust me, I think she's straight so far as her stature in the music business is concerned as an MD, sideman, clinician, and endorser . But if appearing on this show can translate into more web, tv, and magazine exposure for her other music and humanitarian projects, this might actually be a smart (though provacative) business move for her.

Yeah I saw the tv ad last night. Sounds interesting. I'll check it out. And Shelia was looking good (as always).

Something tells me Sheila is only in this to promote or win some dough for her foundation... so, right on for her.

I wonder if George is gonna be smoking crack on the show. I'm gonna watch it, I like "Gone Country" so this will really make me watch with George and Sheila E on it. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

[Edited 1/12/09 20:23pm] Oh my gawd I REMEMBER that song ! I could see George with his different color hair, and a cowboy hat, sitting down on a bench singing a song called "Please let me Countryfunk You" As long as he doesn't have that dude with the diaper in his band, sitting on the side. For some reason I could never stand to see some grownass man walking around in a damn diaper looking like he needs to wipe his ass....I'm sorry, I just had to go there. [Edited 1/14/09 18:28pm]

will be on tv the 24th. | |

So the show will include Justin Guarini, Mickey Dolentz, Taylor Dane and Richard Grieco as well... ...yes, they will definitely need George and Sheila to bring some life to that cast. Put George and Sheila E together with his CountryFunk and her CountrySalsa, and I could see a party jumping up in there...well, hopefully anyway. [Edited 1/14/09 21:21pm]

Countryfunk... I'd say the first Funkadelic record could fit into something called 'countryfunk'. It's so raw and swampy.
I really love that record.

what would Countryfunk even sound like? lol .. heavy on the bass and heavy on the banjo? lol

I really love that record. Which record? George going country will take a while for it to settle in.. [Edited 1/15/09 10:17am]

Maybe some blues song mixed with and heavy on the bass. Kind of like the music they were playing in the movie "Cadillac Records" taken from the mid 50s I guess. [Edited 1/15/09 15:25pm]

I saw a commercial for it a few weeks ago. I'm not surprised, it's a silly ass show. Last year they had Bobby Brown, Sisquo, Twisted Sister, Marcia Brady, and some other folks. Bobby Brown had got drunk and pissed in the bed. Marcia Brady and some other lady had pulled the sheet back while he was snoring and was commenting on how huge his dick is. Andy is a four letter word.
