Vanity: Do you think she was a great performer?

Vanity is a mystery to many. She had a perfect face and a body to match. This woman was able to climb the music and movie scene effortlessly with her charms and wilds. She even was portrayed in a movie by Apollonia Kotero...Purple Rain, which she helped to write. Her life was chaotic, to put it mildy, and her world was crazy...even more crazier than we all had expected. Drugs-Sex-and Rock N Roll where normal for her. Vanity ruled the 80s and 90s with her sexy lyrics and her heavy beats. Vanity was a sex godess and there wasn't anyone that could compare to her in looks or style. Vanity had an Occult style with her capes and high heeled boots and how about when she was a Pirate with the hit single "UNDER THE INFLUENCE". Her dance moves were sexy yet powerful. She could not be stopped.....Her long brown hair that she loved to fling around to her lovely golden skin that was flawless. Her lips were so very unusual in that they curved into a snarl and her large eyes seemed to hypnotize you. Her canadian accent was so attractive and polite when she would be interviewed you would forget that she was a Sex Siren. Vanity is an Enigma...we may never really know who she really is until her book is complete.

Her book is out and you can order it from her web sites Www.Denisematthews.com or www.Blameitonvanity.com Very cool site. Very creepy. She is a deep sister. She wrote the book herself and did the graphics herself. Very talented lady.

VanityFair

DISCLAIMER: I'm one of the biggest Vanity fans ever.

It's funny, because I always liked Apples better until Youtube came out.
I stumbled across the Under The Influence video there and was shocked. Honestly, she was a great performer who had that certain something. I think people lost sight of that because she was thought of/more referred to as Prince's GF.

It's a shame all that happened, but she is where she is for a purpose. Still, I can't help but watch her live stuff and videos over and over. The only track I didn't dig was 'Pretty Mess'... It just felt too schlocky. But seriously... Her best work happened after she left the Prince camp and Motown took over her career and production team.

Vanity had so much charisma. I think Nicole from the Pussycat Dolls is the new Vanity. When she performs she reminds me of her and they both have a strong stage presence. They are really sexy and beautiful and Nicole is obviously a better singer. Vanity had a unique style and knew how to entertain people.

yes she was a natural and magnificent beauty sexy and whether you think she could sing or not...she certainly put her all into her shows. I dunno about Nicole...she didn't do so well on her own then hooked up with PCD and got some training and guidance and now she rocks. kind of like fergie from BEP. she wasn't much of anything when she was with wild orchid and now look at her!!! vanity on the other hand did better solo. with that said...i guess she was a great performer. confused

She didnt help write Purple Rain falloff Where did you get that bunch of shit? hah!

Watch the 20th Anneversary Edition of Purple Rain with the Special features on it even Wendy and Lisa say THEY helped write it, NOT Vanity.

And no I dont think she was a great performer her voice is horrid when she sang 7th heaven in The Last Dragon rolleyes It made my eardrums bleed.

She maybe desperate to sell a book of lies if it is stated in the book. Devoted Christian yeah right(if she is claiming she helped write PR) rolleyes

Like many times posted before by others, the lady had and still has a unique glow of beauty and appearance of how she expresses herself.
Her vocals on "Nasty Girl" fit the song well and i like the harmony-vocal interlude when the 3 ladies sing together :"Please!...Pleeeaaa-eeeaaa-se !".
That's a highlight in the track.

Also like her chat-raps with P in "if a Girl Answers, Don't Hang Up" + "Vibrator" and the convo with Morris in "The Walk".
She looks stunning in the "Pretty Mess"-video, though her vocals on there are okay. They sound clear but don't really move me.
I dig her recorded & Jesse Johnson-produced "Undress Me" on the Action Jackson-score a lil' more.

I enjoyed her number of Movie-appearances, with "Action Jackson" and a guest-appearance in "Tales of the Cript" as a few of my faves, where imo she did a solid acting-job.
That said, i feel that she might've grown into a solid actress if she would've continued in that area.
A few scenes from various flics made an impression on me, and she had that certain "glow" (like Taimak, lol)

I once saw that episode of The Crypt (Cript-edit skull) on Youtube and tried to find it again in order to create a few cool screenshots of her in the part where she has a convo with a co-actor.
That was some years ago though that i spotted it and it's deleted.

Nevertheless i found the following zine-scan online, with thanks to the fan who started the Yahoo-site for Vanity/Apollonia-fans :

I blew it up a lil' magnify
Anyway, sometime ago i bought this zine on eBay and when i read the photo-text,
it described that the pic at the bottom-right is a screenshot from her offcial video of "Mechanical Emotion" omg, which at the time of the zine-article was yet about to be released.
I never ever saw that clip and wonder if it has been used merely as promotional stuff within the biz.
But ya never know, sometimes i still see clips pop-up at the tube which i never knew of before. That timecapsule never stops to amaze me.

Oh please, give it a rest. Just who are you exactly to question her, or anyone's for that matter, religious beliefs? That's right, no one! Let's not even get on the subject of voices with you being an avid listener of W&L.

To my acknowledgment, Vanity has NEVER claimed to have a hand in writing the music for Purple Rain; but, it's full knowledge that the role -- which later went to Apollonia -- happened to be heavily influenced by whatever relationship she and Prince had together.

Excuse me but I never said shit about a avid listener of Wendy and Lisa tyvm. YOU said that. I happen to listen to various types of music. You should re-read the original post fromt he thread starter I was responding to them, NOT YOU.I can voice my opinion as well as you. Dont like dont respond. I was pointing out FACT that she didnt help with the writing of PR. IF YOU READ the thread staters post you should of saw it as a flaw and if the book is actually based on that lie it prolly is filled with LIES and nothing but. Dont assume ANYTHING about me if you dotn know me personaly k. I was basing my opinion on the thread starters post ALONE. Just like everyone here. But yet who are you to sit and judge me being a avid listener to anyone, You dont know me nor know what kind of music I like ty. So that accussation can stop right there.

no no no! to bring up pm /orgnote into forum and nice on the insulting ( with responce of insert stupidity here bit). Another thing how can it be intimitating when I posted the EXACT SAME THING in the forum. But yet who is intimited by such facts being pointed out on the LIE of Vanity writing PR.IF you a actual fan of Prince and a long time fan YOU should of know that part was LIE. The only one starting things are you who are not seeing things being written.

You're welcome. Yeah, vinyl has a great sound too.
And that's indeed what made Vanity's personality special in the biz, lol.
