Thanks for posting that video clip. TV studios usually aren't conductive to live musical peformances but they pulled it off. Her voice kinda sounds "slightly" like Betty Davis.
Her band is tight. Add a horn section and sone female backups and they'll be on it. I enjoyed that clip. Nothing beats live music. "Where's Black Guitaristz?" | |

Tyka's interview is about 22 mins into the show (last until about 33 mins into the show). Tyka talks about the meaning of some specific songs, family, her life, and sings part of one song acappella. It's really good!

Again, that tv performance was not so good due to the sound tech and other components which lied within the studio there. We were not so happy w/it in their regards, yet know that Tyka and the Band will have a Funky time w/u all at the Cd release party at Bunker's downtown Minneapolis on Friday, Dec. 12th. I noticed that too. The backup singer has a strong voice and is drowning out Tyka's voice. He needs to pull back a bit and let her shine through. Hopefully if she and her management team watched the replay, they noticed that. With that being said, I wish Tyka the best with her singing career. [Edited 11/23/08 19:49pm] Her voice is really soft but I think that practice and proper breathing will help strengthen it. A couple of female backup singers would fit her nicely. Those guys are very good musicians but they can't sing and sounded flat. Tyka was positively adorable though. She has a warm, engaging stage presence and a sweet sound. I bought a few of her tracks last year because I liked her style and wanted to give some support. Keep it up Tyka...ya done good girl.  Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. | |

I like her fresh take on Gospel music. I agree, a couple of female singers would take this to the next level. I don't think it necessarily needs horns, especially if she's going for that kind of spare sound. Glad she's doin' her thang, though! | |

(Bolded part) I purchased 3 of her tracks as well earlier this year. I believe we both agreed that her track "My Joy" was one of the tracks we both liked, as it's a good reminder to not let anyone steal your joy. I also agree she has a very, soft voice though, and yes, a few female backups would be a good idea to add, and she does have a falsetto voice liken to her brother's.
