man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

http://prince.org/msg/7/286268 Post 8 .... hmmm wink

I think Shelby's great, very vibrant stage presence, and I like her singing, she has a strong voice. You know, Prince would be very upset at that comment, he LOVES Shelby!! wink

her voice is fine, i just feel like she got pushed on us a little bit too much last year. when i go to a prince show, i wanna hear prince sing. not shelby. not the audience. PRINCE.

it was at least acceptable when he toured with tamar, we knew what we were walking into. but when i go to see one performer and they try to foist another performer on us during the show, that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

if prince toured as part of the band on a shelby j. tour, you bet i'd be there. and i'd probably have a more positive reaction to her.

I agree, but he didn't really 'showcase' Shelby so much in the main shows, she did a couple of numbers like 'Crazy' WITH Prince, it was more at the aftershows. The one I was at she did most of the first half of the show, Prince just playing guitar. lol But did she wake us all up when she came on! "If you don't wanna party GO HOME" "If you don't wanna party GO HOME" She was really good live, I think everyone enjoyed her numbers, and we were definitely more than warmed up for Prince when he started!! biggrin

that's like saying you'd be okay if you paid for a prince ticket and someone showed up to sing and play guitar for him and the man himself just sat on stage picking his teeth and reading cat fancy magazine the whole show.

actually, i'd kinda like to see that. lol

All you ever do is complain...get over it. lol

just teasing. poke Shelby can sing but I'm not crazy about her style either. IMO Tamar fit with Prince a lot better.

I TOTALLY DIG SHELBY'S VOICE -ROUGH WITH SOME BASE - AND HER OUTFITS, WELL THEY ARE OKAY, BUT THEY WORK FOR THAT WHOLE LA BELL REVIVAL. MARVA'S VOCALS ARE OKAY, I LIKE THE WAY SHE LOOKS BETTER THAN SHE SOUNDS lol. biggrin

Shelby's cool, she reminds me of a modern day Annie Lennox

Marva is dope, love her arrangements. You can hear her range on her new CD "Grown and Sexy" -

At times Shelby's vocals can be a bit rough, but Marva balances that out so its a good match.

I like Shelby more than Tamar. But I like Shelby and Marva together more than only Tamar if that makes sense.

The current Prince band is definitely the best.

really??? there's no way i could go that far. annie has a style (visual and vocal) that's all her own, even though obviously annie's classic soul influences are impossible to deny.

i would LOVE it if shelby had the stage presence and the ability to interpret a song the way annie can, but she's not quite on that level.

also, like you said, shelby's voice can have a roughness to it (which i actually like), whereas i think annie's voice has a very clear, crisp quality.

i have to disagree. i think shelby's version of misty blue was excellent. i enjoyed Tamar more from the performances i've seen when she was around but i dig shelby as well.

She sucks donkey balls- I liked her on Chelsea rodgers - but then again she reminded me Mavis Staples in her vocal delivery and growling and I loves me sone Mavis during the Paisley days!

I actually quite like Shelby too. She has a real strong voice and a definite 'no-nonsense' style about her that doesn't come across as fake (ala Támar). I've said this many times but I think she's his best backing vocalist since Rosie Gaines. I loved hearing her do "Crazy" and "Love Changes" in particular.

i'm lovin' Shelby and she added so much to the 21 nights experience. Damn strong hands as well, she also has a lovely personality and a great voice. Hence the reason that I worry that she's gonna get a raw deal working with P. Hope i am wrong.

Well, there must be something wrong with everyone's ears that don't like Shelby's vocals!!!!! My God can she sing!!!!!
The first time I heard her was on the 21 nights cd and I was totally blown away, I actually thought she was so good I'd buy her album - if she had one, which is unheard of for me - I usually only listen to P!!! lovin the girl - outfits and all, there's a really cool pic of her in the 21 nights book, totally love her style!!!! biggrin

Just because people may not like her vocals doesnt mean that she cant sing. Its an opinion.
