I've been waiting for someone to ask this question.

As soon as I realized it wasn't Prince but Rhianna performing with the time, I was utterly disgusted. I'm not even exaggerating. And it's not because Prince wasn't performing. I was mostly upset because they decided to allow Rhianna to perform with one of the greatest bands of all time. It would have been different if they had already performed live before and it was decided oh, let's get some "young fresh" talent to perform with you guys, it'll boost the ratings. I don't know what their reasoning was but it disgusted me to watch a band who had not played in 18 years, be interrupted by a little girl chanting (not singing) umbrella-ella-ella over and over. It made no sense.

It's not just Rhianna & The Time. I was already disgusted months before by the fact that the industry continues to ruin great moments by allowing these young "artists" to record and perform on such momentous occasions. - Michael Jackson's 20th Universe Thriller Album. I cried in anguish when I heard Akon redo "Wanna Be Starting Something". Why did Michael think that was a good idea? - It wasn't.

The music industry is killing it. They allow young "artists" have no track record and haven't truly proven themselves to ruin our music! So, let the kids of today listen to their doctored-up records by people who can't sing or make real music. I can't take it anymore!

I have lots more to say, but I think my thoughts are all scrambled up right now with all the emotion I'm feeling towards this topic!

I totally agree 100%. When I heard that one of today's so-called artists would be performing with them, I didn't even watch it. They've already ruined the entire music scene and now they want to ruin the performances of the older artists. And people say why complain about these new artists and to live and let live. Well, hell, they don't let us live because their bullshit keeps everything good out. And now they want to ruin our shit by performing with old groups. Hell, get a band of your own (like you should have had in the first place) and you wouldn't need to perform with an old band.

Oh Lord, don't get me started on their asses because I'll be done got my blood pressure up. lol

There ain't no substitute for the original and real thing

I love it when Morris gets up for "The Bird" in PR and comes out with, "Why y'all beatin' on shit? What's that for?"

Rihanna wouldn't know jack about The Time...
"Grace": "Do you always keep lingerie in your glove box?"
Morris: "None of my women wear gloves"

Good point, but completely different situation. In my opinion, if it had been planned for MJ or Prince to perform live with James Brown on television for any reason, their performances would have been live and exceptional (which is NOT comparable to what Rihanna did with The Time). MJ and Prince both idolized and emulated James Brown as children and adults (Prince still does), whereas there had been no reported association/admiration between Rihanna and The Time before dress rehearsal for the Grammy's....

Besides, that night in 1983, both of their routines were completely ad-lib, which is great to me considering the amount of pressure/nervousness either of them might have felt when they were suddenly called on stage to perform in front of their favorite entertainer.

Now if Rihanna were to perform with Madonna or Brittney Spears, then U'll have an equal comparison to MJ and Prince performing with James Brown.

That was terrible, who thought of that combonation? We were jamming to the COOL BROTHERS OF FUNK!! and then this annoying singing started, it was totally awkward, Messed up the groove. I could see if Sheila E. or someone from the Minneapolis family came out and jammed. But Rihanna?....( She ain't FUNKY ) She needs to "SHUT UP AND DRIVE AWAY".....Peace

i generally like rhianna but i think the generation gap btwn her and the Time particulary the song choices, was just too obvious and downright painful. And Morris muggin her seemed a bit creepy. eek

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

James was funk and in the era that Prince and Michael were hot, funk was still the dominating form of R&B music. Prince and Michael were simply part of a newer era of it. Now, is this little hussy funk? Hell naw. She's part of the music scene that killed funk. It's a total different situation altogether. Performing with one of these current artists is like performing with the enemy.
