9 Lives Anyone know who the woman is singing back up on The Time's song 9 Lives?
Her voice is great. | |

Me too. The woman's voice is great and I cannot recognise it.

This is what I found out:
It was recorded for The Time's abandoned Corporate World album (circa 1989). Around this time, Prince was already associated with Margie Cox (whose "Standing At The Altar" track appeared years later on the rare 1-800-NEW-FUNK album. She also appeared with him on Saturday Night Live in '89 singing backing vocals on "Electric Chair"), so it's possible that she was hired to provide backing vocals on "9 Lives", but I haven't been able to confirm this. DTT's website (Databank Transcription Team) doesn't say much else, other than it was offered to Cat later that same year. Alas, the mystery is still unsolved. Other singers associated with Prince around this time: Elisa Fiorillo, Mavis Staples, Boni Boyer, Rosie Gaines

I just found this:
""Nine lives" is a melodic pop-number with a haunting chorus sung by Margie Cox in a soulful voice and rapped verses by Morris Day. He's dreaming about a mega fine lover with a heck-a-pump body sayin' good time. Morris Day will die from the heat generated from the moment, that their eyes meet. At the end of the song he says: "This is the '90s and everybody wants a lover, a life-long lover with nine lives"." source: http://www.sweetslyrics.c...0Time.html So, if this is to be believed, I was right! Neat!

If you like Margie's voice and haven't yet heard "Standing At The Altar" I strongly urge you to track it down. She hits some impressive notes.

If you like Margie's voice, also track down the MC Flash stuff from the same time period as '9 Lives', and the two Ta Mara & The Seen albums, both produced by Jesse Johnson.

Thanks Slapper.
I have 1 800 New Funk and like Margie's voice. The quality the 9 Lives I have is bad so I could never distinguigh who it was singing however I have to say that I love her voice on 9 Lives. I will look out for her other performances too.
