Dez Dickerson's New Book? Anyone else heard from Dez Dickerson requesting donations in order to write his new book? Seems he's taking an odd route about doing it, here's a copy of the email I received just moments ago:
Hello Family,
It's been a while since I've talked to you-I trust everyone is doing well as 2008 speeds to a close! The question I'm asked most frequently (even more than "Is the Revolution ever going to get back together?") is "When are you going to write another book?". Fact is, I've wanted to write the follow-up to "My Time With Prince" for quite some time, but 'time' itself has been the issue-I simply haven't been in a position to carve out the time to write the book. Here's the challenge I face-like all of you, I work hard. My company, Pavilion Entertainment, is both a joy and a blessing to me, but, like all business owners, it takes long hours and major effort. As a result, I just have not been able to take time away from my responsibilities in helping other artists succeed to write the new book. There is a way all of you can help me do it, however! I need to block out time to write this book, and I'd really like to do it now. To accomplish this, I need to take some time away from my business. If all of you would be willing to help me do that by making a deposit to reserve your copy of the new book, it would empower me to take the necessary time to write. I know this may seem bold, but I humbly ask you all to consider it. Here's what I'm asking-if each of you will put down a $20 deposit toward the new book, with your help, I can get this new book written. Here's what I'll do-for every one of you who pre-orders, I'll send you the first chapter of the book immediately. I'm so excited to launch this project, that I'm going to write Chapter 1 this week (who needs sleep, anyway?). I'll also ship the pre-orders at least a month ahead of all subsequent orders. I'm going to get even more bodacious-perhaps some of you are in a position to make a donation above and beyond the pre-order deposit. I would, again, humbly ask you to consider doing so. In fact, I would be so bold as to ask you to make the best donation you can. Here's what I'm going to do-for everyone who donates $100 or more, I will include your name in the 'thank you's' of the new book. You will be forever linked to the new book in print, because I can't get it done without your gracious support. OK-one more thing (and I promise you, I haven't lost my mind!). I will personally call and thank the person who makes the largest donation to the cause. Not only that, but if you come to Nashville, it will be my pleasure to buy you dinner! So here's how you can help me get started right now-send your deposits/donations to us via Paypal ( our Paypal address is {...omitted by me in case there's a problem posting email addresses...} ). I will send you the first chapter of the new book as soon as we receive your contribution. With your help, I can get this book finished by the end of the year, and begin shipping copies to you by the first part of 2009! Thanks so much for your support. I can't tell you how much it means to me to have incredible friends and fans like you-God bless... Dez

How's he gonna send the first chapter "immediately" if he only plans to start writing it "this week"? [Edited 10/29/08 7:43am]

Well it's a deposit for the book, so it's not really a donation for nothing, although it's asking a lot in faith (no pun intended) considering they don't know anything about the book other than it hasn't been written yet, and especially with the bit about people "donating" $100 or more to get their name in the thank yous. Pre-ordering is one thing, this is veering into a much more grey area of 'marketing'.
I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot 1800-New-Funk Crystal Ball set.

Ok, I've thought about it! I can't imagine he would really try and 'scam' anyone, he's too well known! He also seems like a really nice, genuine guy from all accounts so.... I suppose it could work, but he is expecting a lot from people, maybe he should tempt us all with a few more tidbits first I mean, what's the book actually going to be about? I haven't read the first book, are there any Billy Idol stories in it for instance?!! Interesting! Strange... but interesting! [Edited 10/29/08 18:33pm]

Save your money, people. The first chapter is all about how he worked his way up to become manager of his local McDonald's.
Maybe I'm being cruel, but I can't help it. This is a man who took ages to post out books/CDs, with some people complaining that they didn't receive them. Not very Christian, is it?

Folks, I wanna help.
Send me $10 and I'll help Dez Co-write the book. I'll even share the opening line for FREE! "After the last check from Prince's payroll came in I knew....." Dez sent me his first book on time with no problems with a CD and an autograph. So I have no issues with the man. Dez is great. Why doesn't he tour playing guitar with a Name Act? Justin hired John and Mike and I'm sure they had a nice payday. And they got to do what they love which is music. His approach for this upcoming book reminds me of this guy: http://www.youtube.com/wa...4jtxextcc8 [Edited 10/30/08 15:52pm] "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page
