Jesse's Gear

For any guitar players who've had a chance to see The Time at close range what is Jesse playing through?

In the Las Vegas shows he appeared to be playing through two stacks of Line 6 amps. possibly Line 6 HD100 and 412VS Full Stack or Line 6 Veta II HD and 412VS Full Stack.

I was sitting directly in front of him and could not get a good look at his foot pedals...his monitors were blocking my view.

Hopefully this helps!

Hi GGD,

Wow. I thought he would be using Marshall or Boogie Amps. I liked his playing on the Tonight Show and it inspired me to soup up my rig and go back to Carvin tube amps.

I have been using Peavey solid state amps which are good and easier to lug around but there's something about that tube tone.

Thanks!

I too was quite surprised to see the Line 6 equipment(...not Marshall)!!!
Considering his skills, you could give him equipment by Fisher-Price
or Realistic and he'd still work his magic...his musicianship is "on...a whole... 'nother ...level!"

Peavey...I still have my little 40 Watt Peavey "Rage" that I used back in college in '87 as a backstage practice amp. Now days I use a Crate BT50...it doubles for both guitar and bass pretty well!

Very interesting. I've always associated Jesse with Marshalls live. Maybe Line 6 is courting him for an endorsement and sent him a rig to test out. How'd Jesse sound through this set up?

I have a maxed out Floor Pod XT Live thats pretty cool. Line 6's amp modeling is very flexible and can sound great once it's dialed in properly. But it definitely isn't plug & play gear IMOHO.

Funny...when I saw the Line 6 equipment, my first thought was, "Where are the Marshalls? ...maybe an endorsement deal!" Minarik...now Line 6!
I could hear "JWJ"(...as Morris calls him) warming up just before the show. The sound was a little loud and electronic(...not as warm as tubes). Once the show started, I personally couldn't tell that he wasn't playing through Marshalls.
I've have the opportunity to play a few standard Teles through Line 6 amps...I'd
love to own one!!!

I looked into a Floor POD but just never jumped! I do like the sound!!!

The following is my setup:
Guitar:
Korg PME 40x(purchased in 1987 - Digital Chorus, Overdrive, Dist Wah, Phaser), Behrenger Vintage Tube Overdrive, and Korg ToneWorks AX100G (nice Jazz setup and portable)

Bass:
Korg ToneWorks AX30B

I've never actively sought out Korg effects, I just happen to buy them because of sound and price at the time I was looking for equipment.

I always wondered what gear Jesse was using during the first three solo albums. Seeing him with Line 6 had to be a shock. I've always loved his lead sound.

Well as far as the first two albums & Ice Cream Castles we can only speculate what was used in the studio. I haven't read anything about the gear used during that period. I've always liked Jesse's recorded lead tone too. But it sounds pretty processed. To my ear it's sounds like a Rockman with some light chorusing.(think: Can You Help You Help Me, She's A Doll, Jungle Love Or You Wear It Well, The DeBarge track he played on). One can never be too sure though LOL!

When the article on Jesse appeared in Guitar world in Oct 1988 he revealed that for the tune Love Stuck it was (IIRC) the combination of a Marshall,Tube Screamer (as a boost), and octave pedal & an Eventide Harmonizer.

I've seen pics & live video Boogie, Marshall, Fender & what looked like a Solid state Lab Series head. For the most part I've seen Marshall heads, & the custom G&L Invader with EMG's with a Kahler & later a Floyd Rose Bridge and a few other Strat or Tele styled guitars. I've seen one clip with him playing a Les Paul. I don't know what happened with Minarik. Last time I checked his clip wasn't on the site anymore.

Bare My Naked Soul is wicked! that in you face thick bluesy raw tone was a huge suprise. Same with the live boot. Really fat strat tones. I was shocked that he got no love in the guitar press for that album. I read one short review in Guitar Shop magazine.

Thanks for the info, KStrat!!!

I have to find that article - didn't know Guitar World did a piece on JJ.

Bare My Naked Soul razz The sounds on that album are as raw and dirty as you can get, especially the title track. I copped so many licks off that album - it's my favorite album, guitar-wise, from anyone in the Prince camp.

Lately, I've been trying a bunch of different pedals, including a Pro Co Rat, Jekyll & Hyde (which I really dig), Zvex Box of Metal (has a very processed sound) and an old Zoom HyperLead. I recently got the new Digitech RP500 to have an option when I play out (last gig I played was murder on my back - lugging that equipment), but I'll probably return it (those cats at Guitar Center hate to see me coming) and go back to my old faithful, the Boss me-50...

Jesse's playing Line 6?....Cool. Probably much easier and lighter to lug.

I have a Line 6 Flextone 2 combo that I use at jam sessions and it's great. All the effects are built in so no extra mess to carry around.

I have a Peavey XXX stack that I love. All the sounds from Jimi to 78 VH to Metallica and Korn are all in there. Best tube amp I've ever had.

Hi Spyfan,

When you've been blessed with righteous tones then pass your settings on!

Now I'm going to check out the Peavey. (I remember you suggested the Triple X a while back.)

The new Carvin X100b reissues aren't as a loud as the old ones.

The upshot is you can still get the old ones on craigslist.

Throw in a set of JJ's from www.eurotubes.com and a good sonic time is had by all.

Geez...I just put a ton of stuff in storage. I recently moved & its's just not practicle to keep this stuff at home. Off went my ozite covered Carvin X100B, my Peavey Classic 50 head & cab and VTM 60 half stack. I really loved this stuff but it's overkill if you live in an apartment and don't play out. Without some sort of power attentuator your not going to get a higher wattage tube amp to give up the goods tonally. (talkin'about poweramp distortion)

So now I have my modeling stuff & some pedals. Amp wise it's a Hughes & Kettner Matrix 100 combo & a Blackheart Little giant 5 watt tube head (the 1x12 cab is on backorder). Gotta keep everything conversational levels or lower. LOL! This will keep everyone happy especially the wife & the new neighbors/landlord.

No doubt Carl...I'm still working on some tones thru the XXX so I'll hook you up. kstrat the modeling amps are great for home recording and late night jamming. The Line 6 has headphone inputs (and cab simulators) so I can record screaming leads and powerful rhythms w/out getting the neighbors angry. (lol)

Jesse was SO amazing in Vegas. He is an incredible guitarist, one of the best on the planet. I have already raved a number of times about the version of "Free World" he performed in Vegas but over-all his guitar playing was the highlight of the show for me. The bluesy vamp he did later in the show when Morris had him "talk" to a female audience member with his guitar was also great.
