THE ONLY GUITARIST THAT LOOKS COOLER THAN PRINCE ON GUITAR IS JESSE JOHNSON (ORIGINAL GUITARIST OF THE TIME) JESSE JOHNSON ROCKS...
This man is on a different planet when it comes to guitar solos. I sure wish that I could attend all THE TIME concerts in Vegas.

I think Jesse is/was a better soloist than Prince....and I think Prince is amazing on guitar, especially his rhythm playing. Can't wait for Vegas!!

its your personal opinion to say that jesse is better soloisten then prince.
but the fact is prince is better only for one reason . prince and jesse compose their solos,so sincer prince is much better and skilled composer it reflects on his guitar soloing also. prince have better composed guitar solos then jesse, stronger melodies and also prince is the blueprint of the the time's sound. prince is the one who laid guitar solos on studio cuts of get it up and 777-9311.

Have to agree with theBanishedOne,
Jesse is more a 'lick' player. his solo's are largely built from (very well executed!) licks, mostly pentatonic material. Prince solo's also contain a lot of pentatonic stuff, but there is a much stronger melodic content. So no automatically played blues licks, but mini compositions in the context of the song. Although I like Jesse's playing very much, I really can't imagine him playing solo's like the ones on 'Alexa the Paris', 'God (instrumental)' or the 'Question of U'.

Jesse repeats a lot of the same licks. You can hear it on "Bare My Naked Soul".
But they ARE very well played and fluid. "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page

That's a ridiculous rationalization. There are a lot of guitarists who are much better players than Prince who aren't nearly as good of composers. Jesse has played better solos than the ones on the Time albums and the song that Prince gets accolades for being his best guitar solo - the solo on little Red Corvette, was actually played by Dez. Prince is far more repetitive than Jesse live, which is where improvisation really counts. Prince has had far more recorded material than Jesse, so compositionally, he's been able to express more on record, but I don't think he's a better player than Jesse by any stretch. Whoops, I tripped over a femur. Sorry, BG. [Edited 6/13/08 9:57am]

blaque knight prince is great guitar solo improvisator, listen to princes soloing on indigo 28 08 2007 power trio night and tell me what is repetitive and limited there, jesse can only dream of playing the way prince played that night.
jesse johnson is great but stereotipical guitar player.he plays like many black guitar player that are under a strong ernie isley influance which is a great thing but when you listen to prince you hear ver beatiful melodies while he solos. i dont go into disscusion about wheater jesse or prince have better skills on the instrument itself. im talking about actual solos. jesse is great i love his playing but i wouldn't be honest to say that he is better then prince on guitar. often when you listen to prince playing guitar solo you're going to find very interesting melkodies that are buried into phrases and licks. prince is much better composer then jesse and thats way he is better then jesse. and yes little red corvette solo was played by dez dickerson, but did you know that prince took 3 diffrent takes of what dez played and mixed them together in what is famous prince guitar solo. so we can say that prince is a co writer of the solo. and by the way blaqknight have you heard prince's guitar solo on little red corvette on coahela festival??? beside being the first time ever prince playing electric guitar solo on little red corvette,it was realy the best ever guitar solo i heard on that song,he played epic guitar solo based on the original studio solo, yet much better.

i didnt want to say nothing bad,i meant to say that ernie isley is big guitar influance for most black and white guitar players.
while im white i do think that black guitar players play better then white guitar players because of natural born sense for rhythm. when black man plays guitar wheater he plays rhythm or guitar solo you can always feel rhythm and that is a compliment.

well I would have to say that Hendrix looked Cooler than Prince and Jesse or just about anybody else I can think of. Prince is bad ass, but I prefer Jesse as far as actual guitar playing goes. Now I've heard some stories and I can tell you that prince knows what Time it is
Anyway I've seen prince a ton live and I will see Jesse next week so Let's see if my opinion changes after that

I wish I could, but I have to keep my mouth shut on somethings Hopefully I'll have a whole bunch of new ones after next week I DONT.....TO THIS DAY, JESSE JOHNSON SCARES THE PURPLE SH*T OUTTA PRINCE ON GUITAR!!!!! LEGEND HAS IT THAT WHEN JESSE AUDITIONED FOR THE TIME BACK IN THE DAY, PRINCE COULD ONLY TAKE LESS THAN A MINUTE OF 'OL BOY'S PLAYING. AND IMMEDIATELY STARTED SCREAMING "OK....HE'S IN!!!!! HE'S IN!!!!!" I'VE SAID IT BEFORE, AND I'LL SAY IT TILL THE DAY I DIE: AS GOOD AS PRINCE IS ON GUITAR, JESSE'S "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT"!!!!! p.s.: AND AT LEAST JESSE HAS THE "BALLS" TO GIVE IT UP TO HENDRIX, HAZEL, AND ISLEY AS INFLUENCES ON HIS PLAYING. WHO DOES PRINCE CITE????? SANTANA.....OK.....AND WHO ELSE.....C'MON.....ER-UH.....UMMM.....WE'RE WAITING.....

woogiebear if there wasn't for prince
there would never be jesse johnson, prince bought him ticket for one of the funkiest rides ever- the time. you said :who does PRINCE CITE in prince's guitar playing you can clearly hear hendrix, santana, george benson, ike turner ,tony maiden from ruffus ,guitar player from rock band boston, you can hear ernie isley also. the less notable but still present guitar players prince eches are tommy bolin(the stratus guy),guitar player from grand funk railroad. obvius influances; everlasting now -santana lets go crazy -hendrix joy in repetition from one nite alone aftershow -ernie isley creamy instrumental-benson rock'n'roll is alive-steve vai dinner with dolores-solo is simular to guitar player from boston. also dueling guitar harmonising that prince likes to do sometime like in why you wanna treat me so bad that stuff he picked up from thin lizzy. so i think its very ignorant to say that prince only emulates santana in his playing. jesse is amazing but prince is freak from another planet. guitar is much more then fast repetition of some pentatonic scale variation. when u listrento jesse's soloing you hear great improvisation, but when you listen to prince beside great improvisation you hear very beatuful and haunting melodies that only prince can come up with...

this thread is fun but in the end they can never be real rival rivals.
beside being great guitar player prince is many things else,he is the milestone for popular music in america,he is a brand ,a legend. 90 % of the beats we hear today is directly driven from prince's sound, ask timberland. while jesse is semi succesful musician. i admire jesse but you know there is only one prince and no matter how some of you think its popular and cool to put downd prince things are not going to change.

Please...man if you believe Prince is a overall better musician fine & dandy. Ease up on the saddle and dismount from Prince's jock for for a moment! I'll give Prince his props but keep in mind this thread isn't even about about him. This type of thread been done to death & at the end of the day it boils down to who you personally prefer. I value healthy discussusion but the sychophant rants get old pretty quick. No one has asked you to defend your opinion. There's plenty o'room for different points of view. Again this thread isn't about Prince. It's not about a put down either. Prince isn't the center of my (and a lot of other orgers) musical universe. Dude is great...whatever! Keep in mind that no matter how amazing you think Prince is he's just a minute part of the musical spectrum. Now back to Jesse.. Please!! [Edited 6/20/08 22:00pm]

There aren't a lot of entourages that make it individually, like theirs did.
I'm glad they all stayed and remained popular. I wish all from that era would have linked with other bands that maybe they could have added flavour too instead of leadership.

His playing ability is undeniable. And the brother was totally cool in Vegas. I had seen him on TV (with Donnie Simpson on BET) decades ago, and thought he was aloof. On Tuesday, he was SO appreciative and friendly. I'm hating the fact he has not been to visible of late. Thank God the Time has him back. - JD
