 GoActive, here's what I've read/heard about the demise of Vanity. I was very young at the time, so if anyone knows any more info, feel free to add. After Action Jackson in 1988, Vanity's career kind of flatlined. She was working on a 3rd solo album with Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Tony Lemans, but the album was either never finished or never released, or Vanity was dropped from A&M records (she had changed labels from Motown to A&M in 1986). She was also up for a part in the 1988 film The Last Temptation of Christ, but she didn't get it. Her recording and feature film careers were finished at this time. After 1989, she only did guest appearances on tv shows, made-for-tv movies and straight-to-video movies. She started getting really depressed and her crack addiction was getting really out of control. I read she had a special beeper that was only for her dealer, as well as a limo just for him to be transported to give her the coke. In 1994, she got so low and suicidal that she covered up all the mirrors and windows of her townhouse and locked herself inside. She didn't answer the door or the phone, and she was just lying on the floor. One of her friends finally came by to check on her, and convinced Vanity to open the door. Her friend saw how bad she looked and called 911, and, after surviving for a few days on life support, Vanity was no more, and Denise Matthews was reborn. [Edited 7/22/08 16:17pm] | |

Where are the vids of her from "Friday the 13th The Series"? She was a pop diva, performing "Undressed" and this ugly white dude that looked like Michael Bolton was an obsessed fan who wanted to "be" her instead of just having her... OK, so I've only found a few more clips to post, because apparently for the time being, that's all there is. Unfortunately there have been multiple other clips that used to be up on youtube/myspace that aren't there any longer. I'll still check every now and then though. There are some movie clips of her, so maybe if I can't find anything else in the next few weeks I'll post those.
Here is about 2/3 of a different Vanity performance of "Undress". The backing track is slowed down considerably compared to the Soul Train performance I posted earlier in this thread. I don't know the date, but it's probably 1988. This is on some Italian variety show...Sorry but the quality of the tape is bad, but still better than nothing... From the same Italian variety show, here is part of "Faraway Eyes". Again, it's low quality, and not all of the song... As DaVanity posted in another thread here, there is the intro clip of Vanity in her "Friday the 13th The Series" appearance, in 1989. The song is "Nature Boy". | |

SHIT yeah I remember that episode. That dude used some freaky deaky medallion to go from a nerd to her boyfriend then to becoming her!!! And then onstage he was her and started to change back to himself!! That episode gave me young mind nightmares back then! Whoo, talk about some old school late night TV. oh yes, and I agree tragic all the stuff that Vanity went through with them drugs. I wonder if she still on dialysis? Her kidneys were supposed to fucked! I suddenly remember that her older sister dated Eddie Murphy at one point.  | |
