Jevetta Steele - The Gospel at Colonus

Before Jevetta worked with Prince, do any of you remember her appearance in the 1985 musical The Gospel at Colonus? The original Philadelphia production was broadcast on PBS as part of their Great Performances series. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this play, The Gospel at Colonus was a gospel retelling of Sophocles' tragedy, Oedipus at Colonus. The creators, Lee Breuer and Bob Telson, turned the Greek myth into a "modern parable," per se.

Jevetta Steele played Ismene, a daughter of Oedipus, and her performance was amazing! eek The cast also included members of the Blind Boys of Alabama, Sam Butler, Morgan Freeman, and a phenomenal chorus. The show later moved to Broadway for a limited run with the same cast. Although a cast recording is still available in stores (and HIGHLY recommended!), PBS does not have any plans to re-broadcast The Gospel at Colonus. sad
