Jesse Johnson's "Free World"

"Free World" is a funk rock classic imo. Hard to believe Jesse relegated it to a B-side! I've always viewed the music as an offshoot of Prince's "Erotic City". Similar type bass-line. "Nobody likes the way I hold my mic/They say it's too much like my friend". I like that he referred to Prince as his friend.
Then I love the vintage Jesse solo at the end. Love Jesse's tone.

Anyone else got love for this 80s funk-rock classic?
the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

listen to The Replacements - its good for the soul

When I was little my uncle used to bump the hell out of this and the Revue album. He had the long drippy curl and all.

In the summer of '85,this song was played regularly on our local R&B stations. It was extremely popular...one of Jesse's hardest jams ever!! Like Prince,he saved some excellent jams for his B-sides.He also used his B-sides to make a statement.Remember when Prince wrote "Hello" to complain about how the media was dogging him for skipping We Are The World? Jesse did the same thing...he wrote a song to get back at the critics who were dogging him.

This is a jam. I too think it should have been on his album. To me, it's better than anything on there. My only complaint is that the solo was mixed entirely too low. I would have loved it to have been much louder.
SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."

When he did this in Vegas the first night, Everybody got to their feet which surprised the hell out of me since it was probably the most obscure song played at the show. Kick ass!!!

Probably my all time favourite Jesse cut - it kills me at the end though that the guitar solo is so down in the mix.
