Sheila E - "Oliver's House"

A great track from Sheila's debut album. Written by Prince. You should hear it if you've not had the pleasure.
the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

listen to The Replacements - its good for the soul

"I'm a sucker for a major chord" is such a great line.

Yeah it is. Good thread. This song is bangin' and underrated.

Love it. Unbelievable percussion. You gotta really listen with headphones to get all the nuances.

But what the he*ll are the opening words??

"I heard, this afternoon
from the neighborhood ____ _____"

DTT-lyrics suggests "slut Deborah" but I don't think that fits.

When I've seen Sheila do it live, they something else and Lynn makes this face like covering her mouth and going "ooooohh".

Yeah, I think Lynn and Sheila won't sing the word "slut" anymore. I'm not sure how DTT got Deborah out of there; I don't hear that at all. I've always thought it was "the neighborhood slut Loreen," because that rhymes with "scene." And sometimes I think it's "slut Louise," since Louise is then referenced again as Oliver's girl.

Hey!!! That's what I think they said when I saw her last show in 2004! I remember it was a woman's name that ended in "een"!

I always read it as 'slut Deborah' and never questioned it, I think it fits.

It also suits, considering the track was originally for the Apollonia 6 LP, where the line would sit far more comfortably (as opposed to being sung by Sheila).

I never knew this was for A6's album. Since Jill's vocals are all over this song, I figured it was just for Sheila's.

I still can't hear "Deborah" in there at all, though.

I also have never managed to understand what she is singing, but it's not Deborah or Louise, I hear a "K" sound and Coleen seems to make sense since it rhymes with "scene" in the next line, but I'm not sure I hear Coleen or "called... (then a name which I don't hear clearly). But it's definitely about some neighborhood slut wink
