there would never be jesse johnson, prince bought him ticket for one of the funkiest rides ever- the time. you said :who does PRINCE CITE in prince's guitar playing you can clearly hear hendrix, santana, george benson, ike turner ,tony maiden from ruffus ,guitar player from rock band boston, you can hear ernie isley also. the less notable but still present guitar players prince eches are tommy bolin(the stratus guy),guitar player from grand funk railroad. obvius influances; everlasting now -santana lets go crazy -hendrix joy in repetition from one nite alone aftershow -ernie isley creamy instrumental-benson rock'n'roll is alive-steve vai dinner with dolores-solo is simular to guitar player from boston. also dueling guitar harmonising that prince likes to do sometime like in why you wanna treat me so bad that stuff he picked up from thin lizzy. so i think its very ignorant to say that prince only emulates santana in his playing. jesse is amazing but prince is freak from another planet. guitar is much more then fast repetition of some pentatonic scale variation. when u listrento jesse's soloing you hear great improvisation, but when you listen to prince beside great improvisation you hear very beatuful and haunting melodies that only prince can come up with... yeah.....it's ignorant of prince to not acknowledge all his "influences" and yeah.....it's true that jesse is in the time.....he's that damn good!!!!! so good that prince had to resume to hoe ass sh*t like handcuffing the man backstage so he wouldn't "cut 'em"!!!!! there's no denying that jesse johnson is the real deal!!!!! point blank & simple!!!!! don't get me wrong- i love prince as a guitarist as well. but if there were cards on the table.....all my bets are on jesse!!!!! CUT 'EM JESSE!!!!!

CUT 'EM JESSE!!!!! The sad part about this thread is the amount of verbal real estate Prince occupies. Goddamn.. Prince got his deserved nod. Again, can we move on? No disrespect Banishedone but all these superlatives ladeled on Prince like lavender gravy is ridiculous! Obviously you admire Prince alot. We all hear things differently. I'm just not hearing this Princely goodness you keep ranting about and I'm familiar with all musicians you cited as influencing him. Anyway..Jesse is one of my favorite musicians & a pretty important early musical influence. Hopefully we'll be hearing some great material from him soon. [Edited 6/29/08 9:36am]

i just finished listening to get it up live from roxy in la 1982 and jesse played good solo but i dont find it better then prince's original solo on get it up.
in the end we cant get to conclusion who plays better it's a matter of personal prefference but there is one fact also, big amount of guitar freaks and people who dig prince and know he is great guitar player, while jesse is only known in prince related circles. i know there are a lot of better musicians then prince but realy prince and jesse can't realy compare . best jesse's material sounds like carbon copy of prince's music. and it only relates to one aspect of prince's sound funk and rnb ,jesse didnt venture to 5 procent of the opus prince have in his catalog. jesse is great but in music world he is just where he deserves to be.

Since when is popularity the barometer for how skilled a person is? There are plenty of musicians that these 'so-called' guitar freaks have probably never listened to (e.g. Wes Montgomery, Jaco Pastorius, Grant Green, probably even Larry Graham) that are great in their own right. Jesse and Prince are both great guitarists and deserve to be acknowledged as such. Moving on .... ... there are live versions (performed by Jesse) of Jungle Love and COOL on his MySpace page. http://www.myspace.com/je...nsonfunk - JD

Wes Montgomery, Jaco Pastorius, Grant Green, probably even Larry Graham)=those guys are much more known music figures then jesse, jesse is great but not as some orgers claim he is.

Wes was one of the hippest guitarists around back then. Big influence on Mr. Benson. And Grant Green's "Idle Moments" is one of my faves by him. Barney Kessel was a bad cat too.

well i can only wonder because Jesse only has a handful of albums showing his versatlity where prince has 25 under his belt plus unreleased...I cant really be the judge Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

listen to Jesse's bootleg show of Live at the mirage club in 1994. If there is ANY doubt who is better after listening to this then you have no clue on playing guitar. Sorry to ruffle feathers but in this ONE show ONLY Jesse blows Prince WHOLE CAREER away as a guitar player in only one hour. Its not even close and hey I loke Prince too but better than jesse on guitar he is not! Im not sure the rules so i dont want to post the link but its not hard to find if you search - thats a hint.

Prince is good and i admit he is underated but he is not great. If you really listen to his solos they are all pretty repetitive. Same tricks over and over. His studio songs are so simple that a beginner can pick them right up. I know because I did when i first started playing and I was SHOCKED at how easy they were. I thought i was just good until I tried to start playing other people and realized how basic Prince's guitar work really is. Dont get me wrong he is still my favorite artist but Jesse is my favorite Guitar player. I know this will offend people putting this on a Prince fan board but hey, I listen to so much music outside of Prince I really dont understand how most(not all) of the people here only listen to the Prince world. Walter Trout(live) is very good as well on guitar. Joe Bonamossa is good as well. By all means check these out too. I dont have their studio work but live they are the bomb!! Same with Jesse. And to be honest I think Jonny Lang blows Prince away on guitar. DEFINATELY go see him live!! UNREAL for his age!! His albums just suck!!lol!

toras ball i agree that lot of prince guitar solos on studio cuts are simple.
but is that wrong? prince is a producer and guitar is just one colour of the song. for example i could never take the place of your man have very simple yet very effective guitar solo.tell me that u would change anything in that solo. prince compliments the song with the vision he have in his had. for example live recording of nothing compares 2 u from hits b sides ,prince could lay amazing solo because of that beautiful melody but instead he let candy dulfer wail on saxophone and she did very passionate and great solo. but when prince wants to cut it he do it,get it up by the time.that guitar solo is one of the best guitar solos why dont you pick up that solo by ear,it wont be that simple as you say. jesse johnson have his space in music , he had his chance to become one of the biggest names in popular music but he didn't. many people here try to act cool by putting prince down and his music.but prince was and is respected by many serous jazz musicians that have cover or played prince's songs musicians like marcus miller who said that prince is one of his main influances on his bass playing, miles davies ,herbie hancock, bob belden. jesse is great great great but i wouldnt compare prince and jesse at all.

I don't think anyone is really putting Prince down. We are all fans, otherwise, we probably would not be here. I think most of us are just giving Jesse his due. Sure, Prince is arguably the greatest complete musician/artist of our time. Some of us just believe that Jesse may be the better guitarist. There is plenty of room in the 'musical universe' to accommodate both of them. - JD

I thought the intent of the thread was to acknowledge Jesse's talents. I don't think banishedone can help himself, He consistantly barrels in with these really disjointed ramblings. I'm not mad at ya. However, do you actually read what you've typed before you post it? You're still defending Prince when other posters are clearly showing a preference for Jesse's guitarwork. Again we're just giving Jesse's props. No need for the comparisons. Besides, lauding Prince or anyone else at another artist expense is just plain trifling. [Edited 7/6/08 7:53am]

i was not putting prince down at all. he is my favorite "artist" otherwise i would not be sitting on 1500+ cds here in my room of nothing but prince. I am an avid guitar fan and Jesse is my favorite(out of the Prince camp) and there really is no comparison to me of anyone else from his camp including prince. Im just giving jesse his props. Keep rockin Jesse!!

better, but i didnt say that prince is better i said that because of his acomplishments in music prince cant be compared with jesse. and every a vs. b topic is very childish but its fun to arguee

I always preferred Jesse to Prince and after seeing him live in Vegas my opinion has not changed. Dude is from another planet.

Jesse seems more like a pure guitar player, but probably only because he has focused on it more than Prince. Prince is too busy to be one of the all time great guitar players.
And looking at Jesse, I see Prince in his style, his expression, the music he plays. Prince is a greater force in music. That's what he sought, that's what he achieved. Jesse is a guitar player who's done some albums, too. Decent ones at that, but he's not Prince! My Legacy
