I see what u mean...Hell,..Dre was doing his own thang and in P's shadow, it wasn't easy. I always give Dre praise for that. He always stayed true to his own vision. I always thought that Jesse's "Special Love" sounded like a slowed down version of Andre's "Love Dog."

Again, I give it up to Cy for him doing his own thing. Being in P's shadow, especially in 83 -85 had to be hard. Folks expected him to act just like P and when he didn't, they were let down I think. Andre was always more personable on stage than P was. And I think he was more truly into new wave than P was too.

But seriously, I think the pressure came from Andre being a direct descendant of P's camp. Prince didn't build a mainstream audience until the beginning of the 1999 era. Those wanting to hear Dre adapt a Prince (or as Dre rightfully puts it, Minneapolis Sound) sound were apart of the hardcore fanbase that had been with Prince when he was strictly r&b/underground. Andre jetted towards the end of Dirty Mind, and laid low for most of the Controversy era, you would think he would've been all but forgotten.

For those who weren't getting their fix of P through Dre had PLENTY of other artist to choose from that were going around styling themselves after Prince both musically and image wise! I hope they realized by at least Survivin' In The 80's that he wasn't going to take the easy route and ride the Purple wave.

It was the return to that type of sound that he and P had being doing all along. That's why Dance Electric fit right in with the rest of the album. Dre told me that was an album to make him some money. He KNEW what was hot in 85 and that was P's sound and look. He could do that better than Andre himself.

I don't doubt one bit Andre threw together the album to cash in on the burgeoning scene while it was at it's peak. It's almost if he went "yeah, I know I strayed away from whatever you all wanted to hear two albums ago...so as a parting gift, your wishes are granted with A.C."

He probably knew he was coming onto something big with Jody, so that was the perfect exit!

youre right it was cold blooded, with love. I commend him on going the opposite direction of dude, i dont think he needed to, and i love his work.
Was he really new wave?
Was new wave interested in a black frontman?

And i will never listen to special love the same way again.

Andre made some great tracks but Prince made epics. There is really no comparison. Andre started copying Prince's sounds in the studio
