Wendy and Lisa Q?

Wendy and Lisa geeks..

Question for you....

I totally love them and understand the influence on Prince and the amazing work they have done their entire careers.
so this is NOT a W&L slam, but I just don't get into the W&L albums..
what am I missing?

what songs am I NOT getting..

Help me !!

they are the only associated artists that I really don't fawn over on their own.....

WHAT AM I MISSING?

Amazon, but it was used. shrug

I got it today, and it was good. I have a hard time telling who's singing what. "Reaching One" is awesome. But I can't mostly tell who wrote what lyrics. The lyrics to "Jonathan" are beautiful but some songs I assume were written by Lisa are terrible. "...Big Bowl of Cherries". Terrible lyrics. Most of the lyrics are terrible, actually. I give it a 6/10. It reminds me a lot of 90's female pop artists like Cheryl Crow and Alanis Morrisette and all that.

Vocals on Girl Bros, I believe, are as follows:

Reaching one - Wendy
Love & Trouble - Lisa
I will – Wendy
Bring you back – Wendy
IGABBOC – Lisa
Uh-Uh, Don’t look Down – Lisa
All I wonder/Anyway – Lisa (w/ Wendy at beginning)
If I Were Brave – Wendy
Jonathan – Lisa
Let’s Say – Lisa
I’ve Got No Strings – Lisa
Hidden Track - Wendy

I think IGABBOC is a GREAT song! Totally love Lisa’s vocals and delivery. Actually, it gave me a new appreciation for her vocal work on some old Prince tracks; she has such a subtle and unique delivery.

Terrible lyrics?? Wow. Bowl of Cherries is a brilliant song musically and lyrically about taking both the bitter and sweet in life and being thankful. Her voice and piano are nothing short of brilliant to me. Take a listen to Eroica and you'll see that they were doing that 90's sound you mentioned before Sheryl Crow or Alanis even came out.

I actually liked the whole cd and the "...Bowl of Cherries" song.

And Everlasting: I have Eroica as well I loved it (that and the self titled) are my favorite, I will have to transfer it onto my MP3 for the old time sake. nod

My favorite pic of Wendy and Lisa( I know posted in another thread but its a great pic of them)

That's pretty much how I figured it. It sounds weird, but I could tell when Wendy was singing by the way she says her "s"s, when she talks and sings.

Wendy talked way too much during interveiws, I always wanted to hear Lisa talk more IMHO. Her voice is just so mellow and quiet like.

Ya'll smoking something. Both girls are BEAUTIFUL inside and out. Wendy talked too much? That was only because Lisa didn't really WANT to do the talking. There's an interview out there where they talk about that. Wendy is one of the sexiest women to EVER hold a guitar.

Everyone has their preferences of musicians I just like Lisa more then Wendy, NEVER did I say they were not talented musicians, So NO I am not smoking anything that you may be smoking Everlasting. Lisa is just more striking in appearance IMHO. You have your opinion, as I have mine.

Man, it’s depressing that threads on female musicians always end up turning into discussions about what they look like and not their actual talents.

To quote Wendy, “Don’t you fucking dare put me up there with Apollonia!”

The only song that I could really get into is "Are You My Baby?" and that's cuz it sounds like a Camille track. Other than that, I can't get into Wendy & Lisa material. I've known this girl who adored them from the get and she's always trying to force me to listen to them. I've heard all of their releases because of her. I actually bought their Fruit At The Bottom and their debut when they were first released. Couldn't fuck with it. Michelle, the girl who is always trying to get me to dig them can't understand why I don't. Especially cuz she knows I've loved Lisa since 1980. I tell her that I dug Lisa when she was went Prince cuz she was in a different space and sensibilty then. Being around Prince from 80-82 was when Lisa was in a certain funk mode. And she wasn't under the influence of Wendy, who I think is somewhat smothering. This is what I've always gathered. Lisa, who I think is the most free spirited and the most talented of the two, thrived while she was working with P. Before Wendy jumped all up in it. I mean, Wendy was able to wiggle her way into actually singing on P's "Free". And that's cuz she was with Lisa. I understand Lisa and Vanity being on the track cuz they were already in the pocket but Wendy? I've never been a fan of Wendy's. As a kid, I didn't like that she took Dez's spot. I always thought she looked goofy as hell. And I was never a fan of her guitar playing. I don't care how she was dressed. She just didn't fit as a member of Prince's band at that time. She was far too do -hicky for me. Lisa was never like that. She was perfect for P. Musically, vocally and image wise. So I don't doubt that has a lot to do with why I can't get into W&L material. Plus, it's just too brooding for me. Lisa's somewhat strange aura worked with P cuz P knew where to place it in his jams. It stood out because P's music at that time was simply bangin'. W&L don't have jams. That's not their thing. Plus their so concerned as to stay away from anything that's remotely similar to P musically that their own shit is boring. I always thought that if Wendy never joined P's band then Lisa would have stayed a lot longer with P. But P got caught up in Wendy because she was the total opposite of Dez for reasons that's obvious. The timing of it was no accident either. P wanted a softer, less raunchier image cuz he was trying to go as mainstream as possible with PR, the album and the film. So Wendy helped visually with that. Why u think she had waaaay more lines than anybody else in P's band in the film? That plus P started seriously dating her twin sister...that shit spelled disaster..Wendy wanted out and dragged Lisa with her.

Oh, no problem toots. You're not alone. Trust me, there are many o.g.'s who were around before PR that didn't dig Wendy but always loved Lisa. Most of the people u will find who adores Wendy are folks who jumped on the Prince bandwagon AFTER Purple Rain. Probably around Parade, so they didn't even know what Prince was like before then. This site is filled with folks like that. That's why u hardly ever see any threads about P on here before PR, except for the ones that comes from me.

I must agree with what blackguitaristz is saying about Lisa being a perfect compliment to Prince’s music and style in those pre PR years. Her style of playing and her vocal delivery (I wish she would have sang lead on more W&L tracks) gave his music a certain edginess which I’m not sure he would have been able to create with out her. There was an interview Prince gave a while back in which he mentioned that of all his keyboard players over the years, Lisa had been his favorite. I can’t remember the exact quote. Anyone, remember that interview?

Sorry I dont Im sure backguitarist might.

Anywho, I been thinking about what blackguitarist said in his earlier post. I remember she said on a recent interview which is posted on their myspace page(audio wise). She said she was dicovered by Prince's personal secretary( a friend of hers) SHE was discovered first, THEN Wendy( I feel blackguitarist is right on this) Wendy kind of pushed her way into the band, and was pushed out front stardom wise. Before, Lisa was getting the glory but after Wendy joining she faded into the background sort to speak. I remember when videos would come on back in the 80's if Lisa wasnt in them or I didnt see her in it, I didnt like the video too well( I was young at the time too). I still am like that today(yeah Im older with a child) but Lisa still has that charm to her that I myself love and admire her for it. She was my idol growing up and still is. I say it before and Ill say it again, Lisa still has fans even today with me she ROCKS!

U know, I know there are several on here that digs Wendy and that's cool. But I think Lisa had a special spirit about her. She still does actually. It's funny but I can give u 2 examples of this spreading 20 years apart from each other. Check out the footage on the Special 20 year dvd of PR. Go to the part where Mark Goodman is interviewing Lisa and Wendy inside The Palace after the premire of the film. Wendy mind u, had just joined the band and already she is totally dominating the interview. She's just besides herself with joy. To the point that she won't even shut up and let Mark ask Lisa a question. Lisa, being cool, lets Wendy have her moment. But when Mark finally directs a question to Lisa and Lisa begins to answers, Wendy is damn near cutting her off. U can see this agitates Lisa but she just lets it slide cuz their being filmed. Jump ahead 20 years later when their talking about P and the experience of the film. Clearly Lisa has the fondest memories because u can see it in her face. She's smiling the whole time while she talks of P. It's obvious that they were really close. Like I said, Lisa was there from P's Dirty Mind album. She was there when Prince was really Prince. She was part of P's most crucial albums in his entire career; Dirty Mind, Controversy & and of course, 1999. The thought of a movie like Purple Rain would have never even been possible without those 3 albums. Lisa was there for it all. Wendy was not. But u can see on Wendy's face at times during the interview 20 years later, like it pains her to see the joyful memories Lisa had speaking on Prince. She's staring right at Lisa, almost like she's trying to will Lisa to stop talking. It gives me the creeps everytime I see it. Then as the interview goes on, then Wendy gets her shit together and tries to join in with Lisa, joking and so forth. But u can see the major difference between the two. Lisa was and is the quickest to smile, to joke, she has the lightest spirit of the two. And she appears the most independent. Wendy always came off as the one who craved the attention when she was in the band. I remember when P was winning all of the awards at the AMA in 85. Everytime the band went up with him to accept the award, Wendy was right up front with P, squeezing his hand, while P talked. Lisa was behind P, with Bobby, Matt and Mark. But Wendy, wanting to bask in Prince's moment, was all up front, right next to Prince. It came off wrong. Wendy looked "pushy". Even as a kid, I noticed this. She was totally different from the rest of the band. And it looked bad cuz she was the newest member. 20 years later, she appeared the most "scarred" by working with P. Like it affected her the most. Whereas with Lisa, she geniunely seemed fond to talk about her time with P. Like there was no bad blood. Lisa truly KNEW the real Prince. She knew what P was all about. She was there and watched him do his thing in the flesh. Helped him actually in the proccess. I think, like Bobby and Matt and even Mark, she understood Prince. I don't think Wendy felt she needed to "get" Prince. She wasn't even there with P that long actually. 3 albums and that was it. That ain't shit compared to Lisa but yet Wendy always comes across as the one who "knows" Prince. Yeah right...

I completely agree with you BG(sorry to shorten your name). 1 million % even.

I have that DVD(20th Anniversery) and watch it as well. I also agree that people have their preferences on who they like like you said some dig Wendy, others dig Lisa and some both.

I also beleive Lisa KNEW her place in the band, where to stand at awards and such and how to act. Wendy I noticed the SAME things you have BG. And once again you are dead on.

Orgnote maybe BG????

When I meant by orgnote maybe I meant to vent to where we cant be censored the way we are here. But notta is happening,I was just venting in my own way.

I know what your saying about the DVD bit and saw it myself on there. I was waqnting her to talk more myself. The only reason WHY Wendy got into the band was because of Lisa!(There I said it! lol)And she was in Lisa hotel room on tour for 1999/Triple Threat and that is how Prince heard her play and let her in(besides her being on 1999's "Free") Im still wondering HOW that happened myself(if you have info and want to orgnote me go for it, if not that is cool too).

Basically I've heard and read the same thing. That Wendy was there in a hotel room during the 1999 tour with her guitar and was playing while she was sitting on the bed. Mark Goodman asked her at the premire how did she get into the band. Wendy told the same thing. I doubt this scenerio because of the time frame. Since Wendy was actually on the 1999 album doing backup vocals on Free, then this was BEFORE P went out on tour. Point being, P more than likely already knew Wendy could play BEFORE they went out on tour because either Lisa or Wendy had told him so. Dez talks about how Wendy would show up here and there while he was still in the band. To him, he has stated that it definately looked like she was positioning herself to take his place. Even Booby has went on the record and stated that when Dez wouldn't show up for soundcheck, Wendy was there, ready to fill in for Dez. This was on the 1999 tour. Bobby said that they would just jam on the song Controversy during sound check and Wendy would play along with them on that. So, it's a lot more to it than P "discovering" Wendy could play, sitting in Lisa's hotel room. Prince ALREADY knew she could play cuz she was sitting in for Dez during soundchecks. Prince and Dez probably already had an understanding that after the 1999 tour, Dez was leaving. So, P was getting ready, grooming Wendy.
