I'd probably start with "The Time" or "What Time is It?". I think I like "WTII?" alittle more but they are different. "WTII?" is funkier and a lot looser.

Either of their first 2 LP's will lead you in the right direction.

"What Time Is It?" is their pinnacle, but "The Time" is a funk-romp aswell -- a continuation of Prince's "Dirty Mind"-esque sound if you will.

'What Time Is It' is their masterpiece. That album is so good,it's ridiculous! Solid jams like "Wild and Loose","777-9311","The Walk".....it doesn't get any better than that.Plus, you got a killer slow jam "Gigolos Get Lonely Too" and a wonderful closing track "I Don't Wanna Leave You" with a surprise ending. There's even a fun New Wave song "OneDayImGonnaBeSomebody".

TOTALLY. Don't listen to these fake funksters that say Pandemonium is crap. wink If you want to hear a REAL Time album where the guys on the cover actually PLAY on the record on songs not controlled by Prince then get Pandemonium. I think you should get all the Time albums in order so you can hear how the band recovered from the lazy Ice Cream Castle.

What Time Is It was definitely the best, but Pandemonium wasn't that bad?

It had some great jams on it, "Jerk Out" was very popular, "Donald Trump Black Version" was a funny slow jam, My Summertime Thang was pretty good (if I recall correctly the same melody as "The Latest Fashion"), Chocolate, etc.. I actually find it more interesting and funkier than Ice Cream Castles, and while their first album was pretty good it was a very stripped down, basic sound and doesn't quite have all the personality they would soon develop and perfect.

That RS review is right on. Don't avoid it because of what people here think. Listen to it for yourself.

This is exactly how I feel about the Time's albums. The first one is very good, but Prince was still feeling his way with how The Time should sound. His vision wasn't fully realized until the second album. Ice Cream Castle is easily The Time's worst record.

When I discovered The Time I started with the first cd. I think that is your best bet than move forward. If you are like me you will most likely start looking for their solo work and you might discover The Family...

If you have a budget go with What Time Is It?

Pandemonium gets short changed on this forum but I was more than pleased after waiting at the time 6 short years.
