Thanks for the post. I watched both parts of the interview. It's nice to see that she is not just another pretty face. She seems quite intelligent and multi-dimensional. I remember getting that vibe when I read an interview she did. My brother showed me a King magazine last year that she was featured in because she mentioned the Prince concert experience where she danced on stage and had other favorable things to say about him as an artist. However, I had no idea that she did subsequent tour dates with him and he put her in the NPG Dance Company. That seems to have really sparked her professional dance career. It was also nice to know that she is cool with the Twinz and that they hang out as she mentioned in part two of the interview.

I also had no idea that her mother had written/co-written such hit songs.

Here is part of the KING magazine interview from their site with a photo. It is from the September 2007 issue of KING Magazine.

Kamilah Barrett

Dancer Kamilah Barrett is more spiritual than Catholics during Lent. So forgive her animal instincts in front of the pouncing casting agents

Being a Prince fan can be somewhat emasculating. Be real: Justifying your love for someone who once wore booty-less chaps and high heels can be trying. Yet, in his defense, when it comes to scouting—Carmen Electra, Apollonia Kotero—he’s like Coach Krzyzewski. Case in point: Kamilah Barrett.
In 1997, the Maryland-born dancer, second row at a Prince show, was invited to rump-shake on stage by the man himself. Barrett, 28, who last year placed third on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance?, looked over and curtsied. As Prince told his band to break down, “I just broke my back [trying] everything I could,” she says. Sadly, not even YouTube has the footage logged. But it does have clips featuring Kamilah, most recently in Swizz Beatz’s “It’s Me Bitches.” Here’s to an assless chaps revival.

KING: It’s progress, but most would think going from dancing with Prince to dancing in videos is ass-backward. Why fill those clips?

Kamilah: When you’re invited to perform in somebody’s video, you’d better do something phenomenal. I wanted to give something different, not just modeling and standing there. I wanted to give just as much as the artists are giving. It’s acting.

That’s one way to look at it.

The stigma about girls, it’s really everyone else’s opinion. [But] I’m gonna be honest…housewives and mothers and young girls, they look at these videos. Trust me, a lot of housewives are watching them when their husbands aren’t home to check out what the hottest dance moves are, and the sexy things to do to turn on their man.
