viewaskew said: Zzzzzz.... Your argument might make a point if Prince's music ever really changed stylistically. It hasn't. It's always been a genre-bending mix of different styles. His experiments with rap in the early 1990s failed just as they did in the mid-late 1990s & more recently. But he used to be able to write impressive pop music, R&B, & rock. Now, it's bland retreads more often than not. His music has greatly diminished in quality & appeal, which impacted on his commercial success. And Larry's impact was much more on Prince as an artist & a man than as an artist who sold records. Larry's influence caused Prince's self-censorship, not to mention more of the religious horseshittery that came with that. Again, that is something that has now lasted for more than a decade, certainly longer than the Tony M Experience. Prince FAILED at incorporating hip-hop into his sound. Why? He doesn't respect it. Not respecting it, he thought he could do any old thing instead of learning the intricate nuances that are key to its appeal. HE FAILED. Deal with it. Please don't try and tell me that Larry Graham introduced Prince to religion. Go pick up a single of Purple Rain on vinyl, flip it over and listen to "God". Better yet, go back and listen to Lovesexy. Prince was already going down that path. Graffiti Bridge flopped for the same reasons. When Prince became an undercover Christian rock act, it was all downhill for him from there because he didn't start out that way and people didn't want to hear that from HIM. You can Zzzz all you want. At least speak the truth and stop with the scapegoating. And for the record, Tony M never took front and center over Prince. That's just stupid. No, Prince was into SPIRITUALITY during 1999, Purple Rain, Lovesexy, etc...not organized religion. There is a huge difference between the two, imo. Larry is the one who introduced him to the ORGANIZED RELIGIOUS group known as The Jehovah Witnesses.

Never once have I thought of becoming one. Many people come at the lowest points in your life and try to "convert" you. If you know what you stand for and where you stand, it doesn't work. In the end, when you finish bullshittin' - it ALL FALLS BACK ON PRINCE.

Obviously Prince really didn't know where he stood with his beliefs which is why the JWs conversion most definately worked on him. They were able to brainwash him so easily and so quickly. Within just a couple of years he was eating it up. To me, there's only one explanation for that: Prince wasn't as "spiritual" back in the day as he wanted us to THINK he was. It was all an image. Only the stupid are STILL Prince fans.

Wasn't Prince's mom a Jehovah's Witness? I think Prince converted more because of his mother, than for Larry. I think maybe he and Larry became close because they had that in common. Him becoming a Witness became his way of being closer to his mom, who passed away not that long after.
People who blame Larry for "converting" him, or having a negative influence on him need to chill. It seems that was raised that way, and recently went back to the religion of his youth. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

Larry Graham studied with him later.

[Edited 1/24/08 15:51pm] Deal with it? Deal with what, exactly? Your authoritative bold blue font? Oh please.... Hip hop really doesn't deserve respect & neither do you. Intricate nuanaces? Yeah, "life ain't nothin but bitches and money" are the words to live by in that genre, such a loss that Prince didn't successfully reign it into his own sound... And you can shove your vinyl copy of Purple Rain up your ass. I'll listen to The Hits/The B-Sides, thanks. I didn't say Graham introduced Prince to religion. And your assertion that GB was the beginning of the end contradicts your previous suggestion to begin with the single God. Before meeting Larry Graham, Prince had successfully managed to balance the sacred & the profane in a way that was actually appealing. Graham introduced him to the JW cult, which fucked Prince up six ways from Sunday. And Tony M was given center stage plenty of times, in Prince's effort to shove the sound down our throats. Spend less time customizing your font & a bit more knowing what you're talking about, thanks.

Yeah, and his whole mixing of spirituality with sexuality is a result of some things he discovered and experienced early on in life blending with how strict all of that was(or at least that denomination has always seemed that way to me). I really don't think he was mainly crafting an image. I think it was a struggle for him and many people and he understood that and worked it out in his music. Why he went the route of JW I don't know, but I guess he met people who he really connected with that happened to be JW and maybe he felt that was it for him...all I know is as a child one of the creepiest moments in my life was when I answered the door and JW's were standing there. I tried to be nice and take one of their Watchtowers and go about my business, and they nearly BROKE THE DAMN DOOR DOWN! viewaskew said: Hip hop really doesn't deserve respect

I've never known anyone to be influenced unless they waned it on some level. Except maybe....Prince...he done been brainwashed

Wrong! There is PLENTY of proof of that. Wanna know where it is? It's in the INTERVIEWS. The way he talked about religion/spirituality in the 1980s is completely different than the way he talks about it today. [b]Prince's shortcomings are his own doing. There IS proof of that.
Who the hell's talking about his shortcomings? What's that got to do with this (other than my opinion that it was one of Prince's many shortcomings that ATTRACTED him to the JWs in the first place...they're control freaks, just like he is.)
