Basically it was doomed from the get. P works in two motives. One, he wanted to get these talented cats i.e., Andre, Dez, more involved because if he didn't, he felt he would have had some shit to deal with. Like he ended up with anyways. So on one hand, so they felt it was more of a "band" situation (which it never was) and so they wouldn't feel like they were just hired musicians slipping up and giving away ideas (which they were) P formed The Rebels. The idea of their identity being hidden wasn't that bad of an idea. U know, having thier shadows of their figures on the cover and not being able to see their faces was cool. But for that project to work, and TRULY work, P would have had to let them do their thing. He could and should have produced it since he had the deal with WB, BUT he needed to have let Dez and Dre have more freedom when it came to the writing and playing. It would have given the project a broader sound. And by having everyone playing on all of the tracks and not P on drums on cetain songs for example, it could have worked with a "band" sound. Dez and Dre could have sung on their songs of course, like they did on "Disco Away" and "Kill You or Thrill You". But don't know how long the project would have lasted. If it had been released and they fucked around and got a hit off the album, Warners was going to want them to make appearences and tour. It would have never worked with them all playing in P's band. The only way it would have worked is what it ended up being. Them writing cuts for other projects like The Time and V6.

Very interesting take on it and I agree with you.

Prince seems to like the concept of his involvement or "identity" being hidden with his writing alias like Jamie Star, Joe Coco, Alexander Nevermind, etc....and projects like the NPG albums.

And based on the talents of Dez and Andre, I think they would have made an awesome album together!
