Are Morris Day's or Jesse Johnson's solo albums any good? Much funk?

Jesse Johnson's solo albums are good for the guitar solos ALONE
I think his guitar skills are what carried him this long. Morris Day is a beats of a dummer, but none of his solo albums showcased that really.

I love Jesse's solo albums. Particularly "Shockadelica" and "Every Shade Of Love". "Jesse Johnson's Revue" is great too.
Morris's solo albums are hit and miss. |

Jesse's solo albums are great, especially his second album 'Shockadelica'.
Morris' solo albums are disappointing, imo. On the first two albums,he uses too many synthesizers, resulting in songs that are over-produced.The songs all sound alike. In particular, his 'Daydreaming' album is a mess.If it weren't for the two Jam and Lewis-produced tracks ("Fishnet" and the excellent "Love Is A Game"),I would get rid of it. . I got this one on vinyl
and I kinda like it... when I first put the needle to the wrecka... I actually questioned did Prince produce it... but it sounds much like the R&B stuff from the mid 80's sounded... I enjoy it, when I do decide to give it a spin really like "Don't Wait For Me" I can remember having the 45 for "The Oak Tree" when I was a kid (it was actually my big sister's) I always loved that line from the intro "not right nowwwww!" never heard the Daydreamin album but I can remember loving "Fishnet (Black Pantyhose)" when I was a kid... and getting swatted in the mouth for singin it in church one time LOL because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Color Of Success and Daydreamin' are good albums. Also the Jesse Johnson Revue album is good, if you just pay attention to the music (he didn't really write good lyrics.)

Jesse wasn't a particularly great songwriter,I admit. But his grooves were great. Agreed. He had a few good lyrics, but most of them sounded like a 15 year old wrote them. Still the grooves and the guitar playing are well worth it. I've got the first three albums and the Ultimate. I don't have Bare My Soul. Is it worth buying?

This is the REAL Jesse - the cat who used to play 20 minute guitar solos in biker bars back in Rock Island, Illinois. His songwriting/lyrics are on point - more personal and not throwaway lines. And the guitar playing is on fire - Jesse's playing is just flowing effortlessly. I stole a ton of licks from this cassette (I got it back in '96). Get it My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

Morris Days solo album are really bad for the most part. Musicaly they are very generic ranging from weak fake-Prince tracks to bad 80's pop and r&b. You won't find anything close to a "Time" track on his records The best thing I can say about his efforts is that is shows there is more to Morris than the over the top persona we all know and love.
Jesse's albums are all awesome. 'nuff said. Don't forget to check out Andre Cymone if you haven't already. A lot of his stuff is cool too.

I always see Jesse's stuff on vinyl... I will have to go to the spot tomorrow evening and scoop those up that I saw a while back if they are still their... I've always been curious about Jesse but I always ended up finding something else that struck my interest more... because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

I agree,Morris' solo albums weren't really that good. Each album has maybe one or two good songs ("The Character" from the first album..."Love Is A Game" from the second album, and so on) but none of his solo albums could compete with the first two Time albums.

I liked morris days solo works some more than not...Jesse Johnson all of his solo stuff works for me...The dude is just a gifted musician and all around entertainer.

Jesse Johnson's solo albums are much better than the far out artsy/fartsy shit that Prince was doing at the time. Those are the ones you need to get first. Then get Morris Day's first album which is great from start to finish. Morris' second album ain't that hot except for "Fishnet" which is his best jam ever. As for Morris' third album, it's absolutely horrible....of course so was everything else in the 1990s. Andy is a four letter word.

Morris's first two solo albums are good, not as good as the Time albums, but good. Guaranteed is for the hard core only, Jesse's solo albums are a must. He starts off as a great mid 80's Minneapolis sound product and evolves into a straint up hard rocker. Check them out

vainandy what the f... are you talking about.
just because u like jesse's albums more then prince's dont give you right to call those albums"artsy fartsy" i read before when you named (around the world ,parade) artsy fartsy. around the world and parade are great albums and natural evolution of the prince's sound. jesse's sound was commercial minneapolis sound with great guitar solos.

no matter how much some of you try to show jesse as underrated genius ,the truth is he is just a great guitar player with no singing voice and mediocrite songwriting.
if you walk the street and ask people who is jesse ,they would say it's that politics dude.

And if you ask people who thebanishedone is, they would say it's that guy who posts the "do you think Prince plays better solos now than when he was thirteen" guitar threads at least four times a week...
Dude, VainAndy is entitled to his opinion, just like everyone is around here. Don't shit on him because he didn't like certain Prince albums. That's his right. You need to chill and stop overanalyzing/taking things so seriously - I bet your therapist makes a fortune off of you... If Prince ever decides to change his brand of guitar strings, you might have a freakin' heart attack. My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

ok jessedez ou are right vainandy have a righ on his opinion but you don't have right to insult me,
first i can make any thread i want, second i can make guitar threads because prince is a guitar player . i dont know why are you so into insulting people, are you so unhappy with yourself? sometimes i agree with you but your constant desire to insult other people is quite bizzare. and if you want to analyze me ,i can anylize u. you probably jerk off on putting other people down and you also like to repeat your tired stories about your so called association with former prince related musicians.

U must have me confused with someone else - I don't know any "former prince related musicians.". All that goes to show is how high-strung and delusional you are when someone calls you on your bullshit. U really need to get a clue, dude My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth
