Hell yes. This is a true o.g. cut. I bumped the fuck out of this when it was first released. In fact I wore this whole album out from start to finish back as soon as it came out. Here's a little memory; I remember clearly when I first heard Get It Up on the radio. One of the leaders in black radio from the 70's and still in the early 80's in the country was 1580 KDAY in Los Angeles. They were always the first to play brand new shit. Anyway, they started playing the hell out of Get It Up. As soon as I heard it, I KNEW it was Prince. That was obvious as the sun in the sky. This was before P came out with Controversy. But it had that Dirty Mind album sound. It was just waaaay funkier. Then when it got to the guitar solo, it was mega obvious that was P on the lead. On the track, u can clearly hear P's falsetto. I was like "The Time? Who's that? THIS is Prince!". I went and bought the album and played that whole album to death. It's still to this day, after P's 1999 album, my fave thing that P was ever involved with. When Controversy was released, as much as I loved the title track, it as an album, was no where as good as The Time's first album. It has excellent musicianship by P. Great guitar leads in Get IT Up, Cool, and The Stick. This album definately was the blueprint for P showcasing this TYPE of musicianship on his 1999 album. The arrangesments and whole sections of nothing but P jamming all point to The Time's first album.

I remember when it first came out also. It was about a month or two before "Controversy". I first heard "Something About You" by Ebonee Webb which sounds just like Prince from the falsetto, to the synths, to the heavy breathing. I thought it was a new song from Prince himself. Then I heard "Get It Up" by The Time. Once again, I thought it was Prince. Actually, I was almost right but Prince wasn't letting people know he had anything to do with it back then. When "Controversy" finally did come out, I heard it and wondered which imposter it was this time.

when I first heard this in '81 I thought it sounded like Ray Parker Jr. produced it. When I heard the guitar solo I knew it was Prince. The instrumentation was so sparse. It was basically an Oberheim, drums, and bass for the entire rhythm section

my fave time song. cuz it's essentially a prince cut with morris on it as well. most of that album is. why it's so . love the guitar solo in the middle. is that p, it's gotta be. whoever it is, the shit kicks ass. i also like tlc's version cuz it's the first one i heard back in the day when i (like most kids my age back then) was obsessed with them. it don't compare to the original though, not at all.

I remember getting this cassette (yes I said cassette, I'm old) for my birthday and I was late to school that day because I couldn't stop listening to it!

1981.....7th Grade.....bought Prince's "Controversy" LP the day before Thanksgiving. Bought The Time's debut Lp the day after Thanksgiving. Wore BOTH LP's tha fuck out!!!!! But The time's got the edge. WHY??? I NOW have THREE copies of that Time LP and TWO copies of "Controversy"!!!!!

Prince's tightest album ever. The whole record is organic. It vibes. None of that trend chasing or Prince-competing-with-the-pop-crowd stuff that has marred a number of Prince records. None of Sheila's records or Vanity/ Appolonia 6 albums feel like works of art (bad vocals), but that record does. Maybe Morris has more talent than we generally assume, cause you can feel him on "Girl". I don't know what it is, but that first Time album just feels true.

Yeah, you can tell "Oh Baby" was written by Prince because of the way it ends. Prince always saves the best for last on his ballads and that last minute or so with the "breakdown" vocals kills. Also the production on that song is so clean it feels like you are sitting in the studio with Prince and Morris. All the important elements are sitting there and nothing unnecessary is in the mix. That's what real genious is! And then he didn't put it on his own record, but used it to repay a favor to a dude from high school!?! DAAMMN!

The first time I heard this song,I was in Detroit (my hometown) in the summmer of 1981.This song premiered on the TV show "The Scene".Those of you from the Motor City know what I'm talkin' about Who remembers "The Scene"?

The Scene was the SHIT! That show had some great dancers. Get It Up actually debuted in Detroit on the Electrifying Mojo Show in Aug. 1981. Some of the members of The Time (I forgot which ones) went to WGPR and gave Mojo the song personally. Once Mojo started playing it, it caught like wildfire.

As much as I love the Time, I wasn't feeling this album as much as I should until I heard the tracks live. Hard to believe

fantastic record!!!. he should have left them alone to do their thing, he shoud be man/musician enough to let them shine. his bigget mistake,imo.

It is not uncredited. How do you think we all know she wrote it and once again if something is uncredited who fault would that be.
