Drive Me Wild/Make-Up

Those two songs are so obviously out of sync with the rest of the self-titled Vanity 6 album, yet they blend in so well.

To my understanding, these two tunes were cut before the Vanity 6 line-up was formed, hence the reason why Brenda nor Vanity have no involvement. Both songs have a bustling post-punk sound to them and heavily delve into the realm of new wave. There's something eerily mysterious, yet sensual about Susan's spoken word voice. It's almost as if she's devoid of soul, and instead lets the music invoke it for her, all the while steadily issuing out her personnel and demands.

I would so love to hear the original album that these songs were fitted for. Indication points it in the direction of being an absolute rocker! As a Prince protege, it's my belief Susan could've more than carried her own as the leader of an over sexualized female trio centered around her (The Hookers?) with this particular sound.

Don't mind me too much, I'm just rambling. But fuck, do I heart these extraordinary Prince creations lol

nod These two songs were edgy and ahead of their time.I'm surprised that "Drive Me Wild" didn't become a big pop hit when released as a single. The pop/New Wave/MTV crowd should have been all over that track!

I remember playing "Make-Up" for some of my buddies while they were practicing their breakdancing moves (it was 1983,lol).They seriously considered using the song in a competition they were gonna enter, but (for obvious reasons) they wanted an instrumental of the song without the words lol

i would have preferred an instrumental tracking as well on the released version as well ..same goes 4 ooh she she wa wa ...susan should have just been a back up "singer" and eye candy only ..damn!
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
