Vanity's cocaine use

Hi guys! I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not Vanity's drug problem was well-known or not? These days, when a star does drugs, the press and public usually find out about it quickly. I was a baby in the '80's, so I don't really know how much the press and public knew about stars? Did people know that Vanity was such a heavy cocaine user, or was it a shock years later when she almost died?

Also, I have to say, where were her sisters during this time? Didn't she have a sister who wanted a hollywood career? I'm shocked that no one ever tried to get her to quit, especially during the '80's when there was a major "Just say no to drugs" campaign...

Actually I grew up in the eighties too so I don't know for sure but I think the press back then didn't investigate stars as much as they do now, and in some ways hyped them up and protected them stronger and were less willing to publish things that were scandolous...because in ways I think there were alot of stars in the eighties that seemed perfect and were at the hight of their careers and were doing interviews and articles for the media and seemed happy only to read in a People magazine a decade later where to they confessed to having a horrible cocaine addiction or eating disorder or something like that and it never got out in the public untill the star came forward.

With Vanity during the eighties she did interviews and stuff and no one really probed her about her werid behavior in some of them the interviewers just kinda laughed it off..so no I don't think her fans knew all the stuff she was going through..I remember one interivew I think Aresino Hall interviewed her and brought up something as in her getting arrested and she made up some lame story and he just accepted it and dropped it. I think that is why a "Barbra Walters" interview was so famous back then because she was one of the only reporters who would ask uncomfortable questions and have her guests start crying..

So to awnser your question no, I don't think it was well known that Vanity had a drug problem and how unhappy she was untill she came out in the ninties and talked about her expereience...there were alot of famous people who had alot of problems going on at the time of the peak of their careers and you would have never guessed it because they looked so happy and the press written about them all tailored to the fantasy that they wanted to present to the public as publicity..

Thank you Krystal666! I was thinking along those lines, but I just wanted to see what some people who were around then thought about the matter.

I never knew Vanity was arrested...I wonder if it was for cocaine possession?

Absolutely. I remember Smokey Robinson speaking about his drug problem with free-base, and that would have been around the same time as Vanity. Also, I remember around that time, people actually saw cocaine use as cool, and they also thought only cool and rich people could afford it. So with the drug use came some kind of status. It was only in the mid-90's that the whole issue of 'Crack' came to be known. That's when it lost it's glamor. But by then it was too late. People were addicted...Rick James, the Debarges, Bobby Brown, etc.
It's a shame thought because I still think V had a real career that she just flushed down the toilet.

Crack became a known and out of control in about 1986.Snorting coke was common at a party as liquor so it was not frowned on. But as far a smoking coke it was kept pretty quiet. Take Richard Pryor he was smoking coke in the 70's as well as Rick James and others ...it was called Free basing back then.

She got caught up but at least lived to talk about it many did not....
