Paisley Park Records: singles and promotion I think we can all agree that Prince's Paisley Park Records label never really reached its full potential.There were a few great albums on the label,some mediocre albums and some truly awful crap  The label suffered for several reasons but I think one of the main reasons is lack of promotion and not always choosing the right singles (a problem that hurt the success of some of Prince's own post-Purple Rain albums).I'd like to know what you would have done differently....what singles would you had chosen?...here's my thoughts on a few Paisley Park albums....
***The Family---The two singles were well-chosen."The Screams Of Passion" and "High Fashion" are the two strongest songs on the album,so no problems there. ***Sheila E. 'Romance 1600'---The first single,"Sister Fate",went nowhere and I don't think it should have been the first single.I would have chosen the funky,provocative "Toy Box" as the first single.Then I would have followed it up with "A Love Bizarre".That's two strong singles right there. ***Mazarati---Can't really argue with the two singles they chose: "Players Ball" and "100 MPH" were good choices.I think "She's Just That Kinda Lady" could have been the third single. ***Jill Jones---None of the singles from this project went anywhere and it's not hard to see why.This album (released in 1987) contains several songs that were a few years old ("G-Spot" and "All Day/All Night" are from the Purple Rain era).None of these songs stood a chance on pop radio in 1987.Notice that,when they released "For Love" as the second single,the track was drastically remixed for radio.This album probably would have fared better if it had been released in 1984 or 85,when these grooves were still fresh. ***Sheila E. 'Sheila E'---Releasing "Hold Me" as the first single was a smart move.It showcased a classier Sheila E and her vocals shine like never before.The second single "Koo Koo" was a mistake.I would have chosen the vibrant,pop/rock track "Faded Photographs" which should have been marketed to the pop/MTV crowd,with a stunning video.Then I would have followed it up with "The Pride and The Passion" and "Love On A Blue Train".I always say that this is the album that should have turned Sheila E. into a superstar,and it could have...if Warners/Paisley had promoted it more aggressively. | |

I think "Koo Koo" was an excellent single. Too bad it wasn't a hit. I thought it was ultra-kool in 1987. Love it still! |

I like this song as an album track,but I don't think it was a good choice for a single.It has a weak chorus and I don't think too many listeners really got the message.The vocals are too subdued. The catchy,hard rocking "Faded Photographs" should have been the second single. | |

Good Questions "got a new love" was a big dance hit apparantly. So about the only non-Prince related song was one of Paisleys biggest hits LOL | |
