A few months after Prince fired him... John Blackwell appeared on some Australian TV show and played with a band I never heard of. Oh my god... it was AWFUL!!! I wondered to myself if he learned anything from Prince.

Blackwell is more of a showman then a drummer. He's a good soloist but that's basically it. All that stick twirling etc. gives you great stage presence but playing a song correctly is more important. By the way Pearl. Who are some of your favorite drummers? Stewart Copeland of the Police is one of mine. I love playing the song "Message In A Bottle" and listening to him groove. His performance on that song is awesome.

I'm 25 years old and I prefer drummers from before my time. Mostly James Brown drummers. Most of the old school drummers seems to be more focused on music, grooving and dynamics than showing off. I also like Jellybean Johnson. I think his groove is solid. Michael Bland is another one of my favorites. I'm a big fan of his monster sound. My dad was telling me about Stewart Copeland and I have never heard his playing. I hear he's suppose to be funky. Other than that... I like pretty much anyone with good pocket and solid groove or any drummers who can make the music feel good.
