Who is "The Beautiful Ones" about? Someone told me it was about Wendy's sister, something about her having a bf att?? I didn't think they were linked during the Purple Rain period...
If my source is mistaken who is it really about? Or was it written specifically with the scene from Purple Rain in mind? For the record his performance of "The Beautiful Ones" in Purple Rain makes me want to cream my panties...every time... Christina

The Beautiful Ones was "rumored" to be written for Susannah Melvoin. She and Prince were together "on and off" during that time. He continued seeing her through Parade and "Under the Cherry Moon" she was even supposed to play Mary Sharon, but she finally declined and they had to get ms. Scott to do it. P and Susannah lived together in a home in Chanhanssen that he built and she spent alot of time designing the home (interior) for them. It's said among his closest friends that he loved her very much (posibly his first TRUE love) and that she hurt him deeply when she left and went back to PARIS If I could be muse 2 the Pharoah......

Wow, that was detailed and helpful. So, it was pure speculation. It may have been written about her, it may not have been... only Prince knows. My (unreliable) source mentioned something about her having a boyfriend when they met, he was instantly attracted to her and wanted her eventhough she had a somebody, therefore he wrote "The Beautiful Ones"....hmm?? I tend to believe this version about their breakup, as quoted by Karen Krattinger:
"There was no engagement party--it was never official--but he gave her a beautiful ring. We all thought they'd get married. Susannah and I were doing up his house together, and we stayed there while Prince was away--he had rented a house in LA and flown to Paris. He phoned and told her he had changed his mind. It was devastating for her--he just told her it was over. I knew I had to be careful because I loved her so much, but I worked for him." From "Purple Reign" by Liz Jones.

So do you know whether the song was about Susannah or not? Maybe not. Christina xx

Christina xx He did an interview and said the different realtionships prince was juggling each brought out a different side in him. Wendy even commented on the troubles of the relationship

This is from the book, Purple Reign:
"The Beautiful Ones" was his favorite song," says Susan Rogers. "It was his first song he ever wrote for Susannah Melvoin, Wendy's twin sister and his new girlfriend."

From all the interviews I read, (can't quote sources), she got fed up with him for not being faithful (I believe he was seeing any or all of the following during the time: Susan, Jill, Sheila).
Moreover, I always thought Prince or the record/movie company decided not to use Susannah in UTCM?? I never heard she declined. Too bad becasue she's a good actress. Although I loved Kristin Scott Thomas too. I think I've read that Beatiful ONes is about Susannah, as well as Nothing Compares 2 U. [Edited 7/18/07 8:37am]

I think the "do you want him or do you want me...." came from an arguement that she had with him about him and his music...I think that he was mimicking her saying that! Um... let me warm up my vocals

when he performs that in Purple rain it's so real. It's not as if he's a great actor or maybe he is I miss that passion

From "Purple Reign" by Liz Jones That was not their final breakup. They went back and forth several times after that. It was Susannah who finally left for good in december 1986. Once again Karen Krattinger: "You can only subject yourself to so much, unless your selfabusive and she had a lot of respect for herself. He probably would have kept her back and forth on a yo-yo forever" Susan Rogers : "She was really gone this time and I knew it was going to shatter him to his foundation. She was out of his life. There was no turning back".

Susan Rogers:
"That song meant a lot to him. It was written for Susannah Melvoin. A lot of songs were written about her, but that was the first one". Peggy McCreary: "It was kinda written about Wendy's twin sister Susannah. It was a scary song, the way he screams. It has a lot of passion and emotion. I think he was very much in love with Susannah".
