hmmm, good question lol I do recall Pepe Willie saying that,in 1977,he hired Prince and Andre to play on some demos that he was making. He says Andre sat at the piano and played the chords to the song;a few years later,Prince released "Do Me Baby" featuring the exact same music.

Is that were this rimour comes from?

Aren't the chords eddie hazel's?

Andre can't write lyrics and i have seen no evidence he's a good piano player or a producer

any links to pepe saying that?

eek ...Andre has released three (3) solo albums and produced Jody Watley's highly successful song and album "Looking For A New Love."

Yeah,...Andre has said that he wrote Do Me Baby. He has said it in the media and he has said it to me. Granted, he bit bigtime off of Hazel. But P didn't redo Hazel's cut and pass it off as his own...he did do that to Andre's.

Pepe's quotes have been in damn near all of the books ever written about Prince. But check out the book D.M.S.R.

I said I HAVE NOT seen any evidence

I only listened to a few tracks i dl and they were garbage. Maybe you can give me examples of his piano playing?

Wow so andre did write it yet Prince still performs it from time to time as if it were his own.

I know he said he worked on an early version of 'feel for you' and you said he played bass on 'i'm yours'. What other tracks?

I definately believe him. I believed it before I had ever met Andre. I first heard of this during the 1999 tour. Also, P wanted to use Andre's b-side to "The Dance Electric" "Red Light", for his 1999 album. This song was actually recorded in 82 but wasn't released untill 1985.

o,k that ruins the track for me then. I won't be able to listen to that anymore.

I find it sick that artists can steal a track and put their name on it. I would never do that.

Did andre step to him? I would of asked for money, a song OR I WOULD BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF HIM!
Everyone around Prince have been soft ass lickers scared of a little midget; what for? If i was working with him and he did some snake shit he would be eating hospital food.

I've heard about this for year's yet I still find it hard to believe that Prince would just jack the entire track and lyrics without some sort of compensation.

Blackguitaristz, you mentioned that Prince asked Andre for Red Light (my favorite AC song by the way) to be used on the 1999 album and Andre said no. So we are to believe that Prince is that cold of a MF that he would blantly steal AC's song and lyrics and put it on the Controversy album(1981) without permission and give AC no credit. Then one album later for 1999 (1982), call him up and ask nicely for permission to use another song? Keep in mind, this is after he allegedly just stole a song! If Prince is that bad, and got away with it the first time with Do Me Baby, why not just do the same ish with Red Light? If your story is true, Andre didn't do anything about it the first time, so why not jack another song from him and say eff him? Why bother to ask?

That's basically me watching my boy steal $1000 dollars out of my wallet and spending MY money in my face, and me do nothing about it. Then months later, my boy politely calls to ask me if he can borrow another $1000 dollars. Ain't gonna happen....

I say all of this to say that we don't know what Prince gave AC after he jacked Do me baby from him. Finance or otherwise.

Let us remember, Morris Day wrote Party Up, and Prince asked him for the song and in return made him lead singer of the time.

Prince jacked the beat for Belle of St Mark from Jesse, but in return gave Jesse credit on Shortberry Strawcake.

Andre may have written Do Me Baby, but we don't know what favor Prince did for him in return.

I'm not discounting the fact that AC wrote Do me baby, I just don't believe that AC got nothing out of it in return....

It may not have been fair, but i just don't believe he walked away with nothing.

hmmm interesting way to look at it.Perhaps the song "Dance Electric" was Prince's way of compensating Andre? It could be like,"I took 'Do Me Baby' from you....here's a gift in return".

It is possible that it was an exchange. Since P did this a lot but, let's be honest some people on this board think that P is the devil and can get away with anything all that time. (LOL)

I agree with that thought, actually. I too believe that P gave Andre something. And Dance Electric was payback as well. Understand, P and Andre have a strange bond. I could tell that they were still close when I was recording with Andre. So, I can TOTALLY see P asking Andre to do Red Light. P probably didn't rip it off cuz he didn't have the tape, so he simply couldn't remember how it really went. 10 times out of 10, he HAD a copy of Cy's version of Do Me Baby, so....

How close was Prince's version to andre's? Identical? Different lyrics?

So what happened is Prince had a tape of andre's song; he recorded it, claimed it as his own and still performed it as his own 25 years later? eek

Andre seems like a punk for taking that.

"punk" is a strong, harsh word. Especially not realizing all of the things that went down. Andre truly didn't want to go through the hassle of sueing P.Me, I would have sued the shit out of P and anyone else who even THOUGHT about taking some shit that I wrote. That's why I'm very protective of my music today. U have it copywritten and all of the legal protective and valid things u can possibly do. But in Cy's case,...wow..we're talking about someone who u have known damn near all of your life. Someone who your mother actually took in and take care of. Cy's mom was a single parent, who had kids of her own. And she STILL took in Prince. Cuz he simply would have ended up on the street. Just that alone and for P to have done what he did to Cy. He's not only betraying Cy as a songwriter but as a friend. That shit hurt Cy, on a emotional level. It's like "How in the world could he do me like that?" As doggish as it was, I believe he just couldn't take it to that level of sueing P. Although he should have.
