good thread, not many ppl wanna "go there" as it relates to the issue of color struck in the blk community. the last line where BlaqueKnight says...
"at the end of the day no one knows why we are attracted to what we are attracted to, we just are" struck me because i think we owe it to ourselves to reflect on what/who has shaped what our images of beauty are. i was talking with a dark complected brother who said he didn't like dark skinned sister. there's something to that on a deep level. we talked further and after some resistance, he said i'd asked him some things he'd never even considered about how we're socialized and thanked me for challening/prodding. also, a sister i dated a while ago underwent a process of introspection where she had to ask herself, where DID i get my idea of beauty from, WHY did i perm my hair, WHEN did i perm my hair, etc. etc. She discovered that her aunts had taken her when she was pre-teen to perm her hair, they'd passed on their "beauty standards and habits" to her, before she could form her own. so i won't make this a long treatise but again, we've underone serious physical and psychological trauma in America and we are affected in ways we often don't even consider.

I don't disagree with anything you've said. I KNOW that some black people have some serious color/beauty issues that stem from being indoctrinated for centuries with the myth of white, Aryan, beauty superiority. It affects the way we value/devalue skin color, physical features, hair texture, hair color, eye color and body type. Actually, blacks are not the only victims of the white Aryan beauty myth. The self-image issues that result from this affliction can be seen around the world in Latin, Asian and European cultures. In reference to the dark brother who didn't like dark sisters, I think that anyone who is not attracted to their reflection has some deeper issues with self image/worth, which certainly stem from the larger societal issues that I referenced above. However, I do not think anything is wrong with someone who typically prefers people who mirror them. If Prince typically dated dark-skinned women, I would think he had some issues just as I would if he typically dated blue-eyed blond women. However, because most of his mates resemble him or his mother (which is a Freudian thing I won't get into), I really don't have an issue with his preferences. If anything, the only color that he is struck with is his own. And I am not saying that that doesn't stem from the ideology that lighter is better, because given when and where Prince was born, that mentality was a pervasive one and it would be crazy to dismiss that element. However, I don't think that is the only motivating factor in his choices. And my point was also to say that Prince has dated "sisters," granted they are a certain type, but nevertheless they are "sisters." So, to refer to my final statement, no one really does know what motivates one's attraction - for some it may be self-hatred, for others it may be self-love. I hope that clarifies my original post. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

He likes the "butterscotch curlytop" types (to put it in his own reference) Nona Gaye is the exception, not the rule. I don't disagree with the fact that Prince definitely has a "type." Also, I never said that Nona Gaye was the "rule." As I said in my previous post, I was just pointing out that Prince has dated/been attracted to "sisters." Butterscotch, curly-haired sisters are still sisters. However, Rick James is the last one who should talk about someone being colorstruck, because black women - any complexion/hair texture - were the exception for him. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

i agree, nothing is wrong with having a "type". i think many miss out on true, lasting love for being rigid and failing to deviate from their "physical type".

He grew up in an era where "light was right". It seeped into my generation as well. The media keeps that going even to this day. The "black" standard of beauty these days as deemed by the old white men that run the media is stereotypically light-skinned/biracial black women (Halle, Beyoncé, etc.) and dark-skinned (Tyson Beckford/Morris Chestnut type) black men. There are others but when you look at mainstream media's marketing models, that's what you see. Prince came from an era where if you were light skinned and efeminite looking, you were in with the women. Thats how it was until the very late 80s-early 90s.

I agree.Prince has spent many years chasing after "beautiful" women who look like models.Of course, these relationships never last.Perhaps he should concentrate on finding a woman of substance? You know...a woman who may not look like Vanity, but actually has intelligence and brains. l totally agree with u here on what u just said""""" with prince chasin younger version (models ,beautiful, attractive girls) tht these kinds of relationships dont always work which u are right .... i can never understand why he falls for tht kind of thing....he should foucus for any woman nearer to his age or some kind and tht has brains and would care for him not for money... if u knw wht l mean there are many ladies out there whom may not be as attractive as these models are but they could be better for him who would care for him like they do and would make the relatioship last longer ....and has more brains and sense than the models have ,,, not all models or attractive ladies have brains like normal people have .....hope prince will see some sense into tht...

It just is what it is ..... Co-sign. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

That's pretty long for many people nowadays. Also, isn't Mani a sister? Isn't she black/mixed like Vanity? Prince has had several sisters - Vanity, Susan Moonsie, Robin Powers, Nona Gaye, and Kim (the waitress from Purple Rain). I don't know if they "dated," but Troy Beyer and Jill Jones are also "sisters." I think it is a misconception that Prince hasn't dated black women. He was also obviously quite smitten with Chante Moore when they worked together, though they did not date as they were both in relationships at the time. He even called Kenya Moore to tell her how beautiful he thought she was. Of course we can't forget his crush on Patrice Rushen who does not fit the mode either. I just think Prince tends toward black or Latina women who resemble him in terms of skin complexion and features. It's not uncommon for people to be attracted to people who look similar to them. It might seem narcissistic to some, but it's not uncommon. My parents resemble each other. And I tend toward men who look similar to me with regard to skin complexion and features as well. I think that it is highlighted with Prince because he is a fair skinned black man as are most of the women he dates. Because color issues are so big in the black community, his preferences are highlighted. No one really comments on white rockers who only date blondes. I never hear, so and so should date some brunettes. [Edited 4/10/07 21:08pm] People often ask me and my husband are related. I actually do think he looks like he could be in my biological family.
