W&L girlbros - How is it?

I've never heard it. I'd like 2. Can any one tell me how it is.

Really?, I've been very keen on getting hold of that.

Apart from Mayte, Wendy was th sexiest thing ever 2 hang with prince
I can't imagine her gettin' along very well with Sheila or mia.

What about the album "eroica"?

Maybe I'm the wrong person 2 ask. I don't like ANY of their solo material.

That would explain why you would post on this thread then. rolleyes I guess someone needed some attention.
Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

Depends what your musical tastes are. The first 2 W&L albums - "W&L" and "Fruit at the Bottom" were fairly close in sound to Prince. For you W&L fans out there I know thats a sweeping generalisation but it's kind of accurate. Whether you think P influenced W&L or vice versa is up to you!!

Eroica was the album that gave them their sound and to me defined much of the female solo singer songwriter stuff that came along later - Sheryl Crow anyone? There are some class tracks on Eroica. If you can find it look for the limited release with a 4 track mini CD of piano instrumentals from Lisa. Top quality.

Girl Bros was another move on musically. I think the reason for recording it was in the wake of Lisa's brothers death so the album deals with some pretty heavy emotional stuff but I've never heard an album like it before or since. Total class.

If you want my advice, go immerse yourself in some W&L. You could do far far worse.

By the way I think there are some GirlBros related live performances on YouTube at the moment so you can always check the girls out live over there!

Correction, Wendy's brother. Lisa's brother was still alive and well when they released Girl Bros.
But good post though. smile

Correction: Depressing and a waster of $$$$$.

Their first cd was the best one of the four they released by a long shot.

Wow...shame on them for not making the passing of Wendy's brother more upbeat for the listener.

The lyrics are heartfelt and the music is typical Wendy and Lisa brilliance.

If you're expecting it to sound like Prince, you won't care for it.

But looked at another way, Eroica is really the album that launched the era of the female singer-songwriter. Seriously. Sheryl Crow? Fiona Apple? Even to a degree Ani -- all of them walk on the trail blazed (without commercial, but with heavy critical success) by W&L.

Girl Bros. trods the same territory, but deepens the path considerably. If you're looking for confessional singer-songwriter, you're going to love it. It's raw, honest, beautiful, melodic. If you're looking for Prince women in lingerie, out to satify some commercial interest? Nope. Not gonna be your thing.

My 2nd fave W&L album. If you are trying to choose between this and Eroica...I would choose Eroica...only because its more accessible. It took me a little longer to appreciate Girl Bros, but once it started sinking in it became a favorite.

Here is my list:

1. Eroica
2. Girl Bros
3. Wendy & Lisa
4. Friendly Fire (unreleased but worth searching for)
5. Fruit at the Bottom

I think W&L are in a totally different league compared to other Prince associates (with the exception on Sheila E). They are truly original and exceptional musicians. Totally underappreciated imo.

I know the circumstances of the album and it doesn't make it any better material wise. You could take away the depressing lyrics and some would still not like it.

You really need to lighten up. Someone asked an honest question and people gave their opinions about it.

depending on your personal taste...

to some the album could be considered depressing but for me its an uplifting tribute to a life lost...i lost my cousin (who was a few months younger) around the time this album came out and the song "I Will" helped me through...

so sure, to some ears the album could be considered depressing but for me its not..furthermore, tchad blake's production ROCKS on this album...

if you enjoy nuanced delicate sounds then i say give it a try. thumbs up!

I think your ranking is almost identical to mine.

And, I suspect that both our rankings would be very different to someone looking for a very Prince/pop/funk sound. I don't know that's good or bad, it's just preference.

Regarding the discussion about grief and loss: I'm struck by what Milan Kundera often says about the novel "answering questions that only the novel can answer." In a sense, Girl Bros. answers questions that can only be explored through music. They may not be questions that everyone wants to explore -- which is their taste, and their right. But for those that want to explore the topics of love and loss through the medium of modern music, I honestly can't think of a better album. I'm very serious about this.

falloff Come now Kat,you almost sound surprised that they go "missing"....Its too bad somethings never change, huh? BTW, I too enjoyed Girlbros although certain songs had to grow on me...But if you are a W&L fan, you do have to give it a try, even if at the end you dont like it. Try it, you might like it.....or so they say.

Definately the most "challenging" Wendy & Lisa album, but I love it.

The first track, "Reaching One", is the standout track for me.

Damn near perfection!!!!

I personally prefer "Fruit At The Bottom" as my fav Wendy & Lisa album, though.

I think so. But only because after all these years, he is the most accessible point of comparison and one by which W&L tend to be measured.

And, it's the forum. If I were writing in SherylCrow.org or DoyleBramhallII.org, I might use them as points of reference. But, I'm not.

That was a rhetorical question, actually, to which the answer is "no".
