Well, in 1987 I liked Jody Watley's self-titled album more than Sheila E.'s White Album. Does that count?

I'll take W&L's Girl Bros over NewPower Soul...

back in 1990, I prefered Wendy & Lisa's Eroica album + tour over Prince's Graffiti Bridge album + Nude tour.

But usually I don't see associates as competition but amendment.

Rhastas is right. Pandemonium is SO much better than Graffiti Bridge. The best stuff on that album are one or two Prince songs, but it is The Time's music that sets it off.

The Exodus has Begun is also much better than anything Prince was putting out around that era as well. Great side album.

In the 1st case my answer would be no, though i really LOVED some associated artists album (Particularly Wendy & Lisa, Mazarati & Morris Day's albums.)

In the 2nd case the answer is yes & no : i loved most side-projects as much as their "Prince" contemporary counterpart.
2 me, almost all "side-projects" r as good as the official "Prince" albums & it's a shame most of them have been forgotten by (& unavailable 2) the general public.

I'm not sure if it was Batman or Lovesexy that was out when Jesse Johnson dropped the Every Shade of Love Album. At that time I remember playing Jesse's album a lot more though.....

All of Jesse Johnson's albums were better than Prince's at the time. Prince was on his damn artsy/fartsy trip. Jesse was throwing down the cold Minneapolis Sound that Prince used to be known for but was disappointing the hell out of everyone by not delivering anymore.

Hell yeah! I love Mazarati's album. I wanted to sling that damn classical ass "Parade" upside the wall when I bought it and see how many pieces it could break into.

For some reason, "I Guess It's All Over" reminds me of a Rick James slow jam. It must be the sound of the bass in that song.
