Eroica was the album that gave them their sound and to me defined much of the female solo singer songwriter stuff that came along later - Sheryl Crow anyone? There are some class tracks on Eroica. If you can find it look for the limited release with a 4 track mini CD of piano instrumentals from Lisa. Top quality.

Girl Bros was another move on musically. I think the reason for recording it was in the wake of Lisa's brothers death so the album deals with some pretty heavy emotional stuff but I've never heard an album like it before or since. Total class.

If you want my advice, go immerse yourself in some W&L. You could do far far worse.

By the way I think there are some GirlBros related live performances on YouTube at the moment so you can always check the girls out live over there!

But looked at another way, Eroica is really the album that launched the era of the female singer-songwriter. Seriously. Sheryl Crow? Fiona Apple? Even to a degree Ani -- all of them walk on the trail blazed (without commercial, but with heavy critical success) by W&L.

Girl Bros. trods the same territory, but deepens the path considerably. If you're looking for confessional singer-songwriter, you're going to love it. It's raw, honest, beautiful, melodic. If you're looking for Prince women in lingerie, out to satify some commercial interest? Nope. Not gonna be your thing.

My 2nd fave W&L album. If you are trying to choose between this and Eroica...I would choose Eroica...only because its more accessible. It took me a little longer to appreciate Girl Bros, but once it started sinking in it became a favorite.

Here is my list:

1. Eroica
2. Girl Bros
3. Wendy & Lisa
4. Friendly Fire (unreleased but worth searching for)
5. Fruit at the Bottom

I think W&L are in a totally different league compared to other Prince associates (with the exception on Sheila E). They are truly original and exceptional musicians. Totally underappreciated imo.

to some the album could be considered depressing but for me its an uplifting tribute to a life lost...i lost my cousin (who was a few months younger) around the time this album came out and the song "I Will" helped me through...

so sure, to some ears the album could be considered depressing but for me its not..furthermore, tchad blake's production ROCKS on this album...

if you enjoy nuanced delicate sounds then i say give it a try.

Regarding the discussion about grief and loss: I'm struck by what Milan Kundera often says about the novel "answering questions that only the novel can answer." In a sense, Girl Bros. answers questions that can only be explored through music. They may not be questions that everyone wants to explore -- which is their taste, and their right. But for those that want to explore the topics of love and loss through the medium of modern music, I honestly can't think of a better album. I'm very serious about this.

Definately the most "challenging" Wendy & Lisa album, but I love it.

The first track, "Reaching One", is the standout track for me.

Damn near perfection!!!!

I personally prefer "Fruit At The Bottom" as my fav Wendy & Lisa album, though.

I'm a big W&L fan and have all their albums except for GirlBros.
As I live in the UK i just can't seem to find it anywhere...
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
