Neapolitan---the Prince girl group that never happened Back in the mid-80s,I remember hearing about another girl group that Prince was gonna put together. The concept was totally different from Vanity/Apollonia 6.This time, the girls were gonna be singing "clean" songs...very Supremes-like.Prince came up with the name 'Neapolitan' because one girl would be black (chocolate),one girl would be white (vanilla) and one girl would be a redhead (strawberry)...lol...sounds like a crazy concept, but it could have worked.
If Prince had followed through with this idea, what songs do you think he could have given these girls? I think the Family outtake "Missunderstood" would have been perfect for a girl group. [Edited 2/14/07 5:30am]

Where did you hear this? Was this just a rumor, or did it come from someone in Paisley, or a Prince interview or something? I haven't heard this before.

Where did you hear this? Was this just a rumor, or did it come from someone in Paisley, or a Prince interview or something? I haven't heard this before. I read about Neapolitan in Black Beat magazine,in the summer of 1985.There was an article about Paisley Park Records, which had just been formed by Prince. In many Black Beat articles, they used reliable sources. The article mentioned upcoming projects/artists like Taja Sevelle,Jill Jones and Mazarati.Since those albums actually materialized, the Neapolitan idea was probably planned as well. Most likely,it was just another concept that he came up with, but never followed through with it.My theory is that, this group was intended as a replacement for Apollonia 6,who had just broken up.Perhaps Prince was tired of all the criticism he received for Vanity/Apollonia 6 and their in-your-face sexiness,so he came up with the idea for a "clean" girl group....an 80s Supremes. Incidentally, also around this time,I recall reading about an all-girl band that BrownMark was putting together. They were called Mercedes and was supposed to be a female version of Mazarati. They were supposed to be a group of females playing their own instruments (Paisley Park's answer to Klymaxx,if you will).BrownMark was gonna write and produce their album and submit the project to Prince/Paisley Park. This news was printed in Rock N Soul magazine, another mag that was usually right on the money when it came to Prince news. . I used to read those mags too.... but never heard of Neopolitan (not saying it isn't true though!)
I didn't know about Mercedes either, until the whole Robin Power threads started up on the Org last year..... and BassDame who was one of the Uptown Dames from Robin Power and the Uptown Dames started posting and she says she was one the bass player for Mercedes. if you search those threads you can read about her experience.

It's too bad that Mercedes didn't happen. That would have been cool....a female band playing funk and rock....like the female version of Mazarati. It's interesting to think what Paisley Park Records could have been, with kickass acts like that.

Do you remember when one of those mags announced the Paisley Park tour: Headliner Sheila E with opening acts The Family and Mazerati??? I almost lost it as I read the article! I was in college and was like "When.... where.... how do i get tickets???" And then it never happened, sadly, the Family broke up etc. The good news is the Family Jamm was, in a way, that tour and so much more, 17 years later . Also, as I'm sure you've seen on here, the Family is getting back together. Yay!

Yeah,I was sooooo disappointed that this tour didn't happen Instead,The Family and Mazarati broke up,and Sheila E. became the opening act for Lionel Richie.I recall another Black Beat article that talks about Prince's disappointment too. "He's kinda pissed at the way everyone packed up and split",the insider says."Many of them felt that they had the right to leave, since they weren't making much money, but he says he told them that's how it's gonna be in the beginning".

I don't remember hearing about this group being planned. Was this before or after the "Purple Rain" era? If it was before, they would have been a great group like The Time and Vanity 6 was. If it was after, Prince would have probably put same damn orchestras and horns and shit on their album and fucked it up. Andy is a four letter word.

It was in 1985,just after the whole 'Purple Rain' era I didn't miss anything then because he would have put some classical shit on their album like he did with The Family during that same era. Andy is a four letter word.
