Was Brown Mark actually a GOOD Guitarist?

ok i know Prince doesn't hang around with SCRUBS, let alone put them in his bands but i was just wondering about Brown Mark. i don't recall ever seeing him play something memorable. doesn't mean he wasn't good, helping to maintain a rhythm section is IMPORTANT, but unlike wendy, i don't recall any solos or any "call outs" on songs from prince. i heard he did some writing and stuff too, anyone have any info. on this brotha?

I think he played the bass, not guitar...

He was a good bassist yes and even Prince said that he would take the bass out of music if it weren't for Mark's contributions.

You should listen to some stuff from the parade/hit n' run tour, Mark was killin' it...think he was a damn good bassist, just didn't have as much a chance to show it off unlike Sonny & Rhonda.

was just listening to the extended Little Red Corvette. i'd have to read the credits to see if that was Mark's bass work there.

Brown Mark was the best bassist Prince ever had. Unlike most guys playing bass these days, he wasn't a frustrated guitarist - he was actually a bass player.

Pretty sure that's Prince on bass...that's the problem really, you have to look at the live shows to discover just how tight the revolution were in their prime.

I disagree. I think Mark was a better bassist than Prince.
I guess everyone on this thread is forgetting Mazarati, too? Mazarati was BROWN MARK'S project and he handled it just like Prince handles his protogees. He went in, played mostly everything and Terry Casey sang. Mark Brown is no jpke as a producer. He's a multi-instrumentalist just like Prince.

woogiebear

I've seen Brownmark play TWICE with Prince:

1)The "Triple Threat Tour" (w/Vanity 6 & The Time)- Even though the Time whooped Prince's ass up n' down the tour, Brownmark held it DOWN!!!!!

2)Purple Rain Tour- HELD IT DOWN AS WELL!!!!

Brownmark was a KICKASS BASSIST who more than made up for the departure of Andre' Cymone. He ALSO played bass on the Mazarati LP (save "100 MPH")!!!!!

So.....HELL YEAH!!!!! GO BROWNMARK!!!!!

BrownMark is a very good Bass Player. His playing really improved when he got with Prince. I remember him Jamming with Stevie Wonder on MTV back in the day. They were playing "Superstition" Mark tore it up.

When was this?
It was back in the 80's. I'm thinking probably 86-87.

There's not much studio proof of Brownmark's contribution to the Revolution.
The one that stands out the most would be on "America (Extended Version)."

I also always wondered if that extended part to the "Kiss" 12" was the full Revolution. If it was, then that's a great example of Brownmark's abilities.

Check Prince & the Revolution's live performances before the group split. Listen HARD (you almost have to strain) for the bass.

Mark laid it down. nod

I agreed. Besides Wendy and Lisa, the rest of the Revolution (1983-86) didn't do much in the studio.

Also Brownmark had a lot of creative input with Mazarati so if anyone wants to listen to his bass check out the group's album. They had some good shit on it.

Mark was the best bassist P ever had. Period. Anything P could play on bass, Mark could duplicate AND take it to another level.
