New topic PrintableThe Family has long been my favorite Prince side project. I don't know how great they'd be after so many years, but I'd certainly give them a chance. If Susannah is doing the songwriting, then it certainly could be good. I'm really psyched about this!
I met St.Paul about 6 weeks ago, and in our short conversation, we touched on The Family album, and immediately I saw a glimmer in his eyes. He had to have known then, I'm sure. And for those interested in what he's been doing, he's mostly been into producing all these years, and he still sings with his real family as well... they're all musical...brothers, sisters, mother. He's written many songs for them and their musical endeavors. I met him at his family's Christmas Concert....and btw, he has a nice residence in the Minneapolis area..no van.

It was truly a shame that they put 2gether the best version of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' and most people have never heard it. If they can work with P and put 2gether some new tracks, that would be fantastic.
If they are bitter, who could blame them. I'm sure they worked pretty hard 2 put the album out and P pretty much gives them the Heisman because it conflicts with completing the 'Under The Cherry Moon' project. He's a great musician but u kinda have to admit that when he gets bored with or something more enticing comes along he tends to bail on certain projects. I don't think Jellybean and Jerome worked that hard. Are they even on the first album at all?

Susannah's a pretty strong songwriter in her own right, having had songs recorded by William Orbit, Madonna, Doyle Bramhall II, Prince, and Eric Clapton among others. Hmm. I'd love to see the new Family do a version of Susannah's "Violets". That would be awesome.

Cool - thanks for the update. It's great that you got to meet St. Paul. It sounds like he's doing well, which is good to hear. It would be a neat to be part of a family that was all involved in music in some way. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Uh... okay. Is this a slam at Prince? Um, Prince created The Family. Prince wrote them their one and only hit... so... Nice way to announce a "come back". Sounds kinda bitter to me. ...and another thing... why is this front page news? A sticky would have sufficed. Uh... okay. Is this a slam at Prince? Um, Prince created The Family. Prince wrote them their one and only hit... so... Nice way to announce a "come back". Sounds kinda bitter to me. I think what they mean is,they're gonna actually promote the record the way it should have been promoted.Back in 1985,Paul Peterson and the other members were disappointed with the lack of promotion their album received.Prince was spreading himself too thin....filming 'Under The Cherry Moon',recording 'Parade',doing occasional gigs,AND trying to run a record company. As a result, the Family album came and went without making any impact. They don't want the same thing to happen this time. And isn't it funny that 20plus years later their new album is going to be promoted the way their old should have been---by hyping up the Prince connection! Local radio station-- Up next , a new song by the band that first recorded "Nothing Compares 2 U" back in 1985 when they were put together by Prince. For all the young people that don't know, Prince is the guy that performed at the Super Bowl in 2007. Anyway, man, here's the new song I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

A side project Prince did in 1985, shortly after the break-up of The Time. It featured "St." Paul Peterson and Susannah Melvoin on vocals with Eric Leeds on Sax. Officially, Jellybean Johnson and Jerome Benton were members as well, although they didn't actually play on the album. The album is significant in that it was the first time that Prince used the Clare Fisher orchestra. It is also notable for featuring the original recording of "Nothing Compares 2 U", several years before Sinead O'Connor would have a hit with it. A single for "The Screams of Passion" was released, with a subsequent video. For some weird reason, Prince had Eric Leeds mime playing bass in the clip You can see the video here: http://www.youtube.com/wa...myWTmDB_6U Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. According to Paul Peterson, the promotion for the Family album was non-existent.They did a video for the first single "Screams Of Passion" and played one gig at First Avenue. He angrily called Prince on the phone while he was in France filming 'Under The Cherry Moon'.He told Prince "You can't do a million things at one time",and Prince replied "Oh yes I can.I did it with the Time.I did it with Sheila E" After this heated conversation,Paul quit the band and they broke up. They were nice outfit. I would love for this to come to fruition. bhayesview

as far as "promotion" ... i remember working in a small radio station back then and i thought it was promoted well ... i remember playin "screams of passion " a few times .... of course i thought it ... "eh" for Prince ... but hey what do i know .... Not sure what Paul did after quitting the Family. I know he released several solo albums, but I don't think they sold very well, unfortunately. His debut solo joint was pretty cool even though he ripped off "High Fashion" with a song called "Rich Man", but it was an overall good album. His other relases were more in the rock-pop genre though. Cornbread, Grits, and Collard Greens/I got what you need/If you want it/Cuz I'm a pimp, girl/With a drippy, juicy Jheri Curl
